SQ5 wheels

Re: SQ5 wheels
I went with the 21's! When I put those babies on in spring it will be like xmas all over again. For now, I have kept the OEM 20's for winter and just ordered Blizzack DM-V1's to be mounted on them next week. I don't mind having the two sets of OEM wheels, as I quite like the OEM look and I intend on being an Audi owner for a very long time. cadillac, you must be counting down the days to January...

Re: SQ5 wheels
I think you made the right choice.
As for my arrival, I just got this email update from my dealer:
Very pumped. I have to get my LM60 Blizzaks mounted on the Hartmanns, but I am planning on applying a coat of sealer on the rims from Gtechniq, first. Makes cleaning the rims a lot easier since dirt and dust can't bond with the surface as well. I am not looking forward to that OEM brake dust. That stuff will penetrate the paint on the rims if not dealt with.
As for my arrival, I just got this email update from my dealer:
Hi Rick,
Just wanted to give you a quick update on your new baby. Looks like your SQ5 is completely built and factory inspected. I'm showing it delivered to port on November 8th. Vehicle was loaded on the ship yesterday.
It will make its way to Halifax soon. We're on the home stretch!

Re: SQ5 wheels
55cadillacking thanks for the Essex Distributors/RPI Equipped recommendation. They mounted the DM-V1 boots yesterday and waxed up my 20's and 21's to make cleaning the brake dust much easier. Service was first class. I'll definitely use them for any further customization work on the SQ5. I am considering H&R springs to bring it down around 1" and close that gap, but it's a trade off b/c I like sitting up higher. Can't wait to get these 21's mounted in the spring!
I had a look at their RPI owned 2014 Q5 TDI with a Caractere wide body kit and 21" wheels, lowered around 1"-1.5" with H&R springs (see the third photo attached). Sick looking machine! Easily the nicest looking Q5 I have ever seen.
It must be a matter of days for you now. Look forward to hearing how you enjoy the SQ once it finally arrives.

Re: SQ5 wheels
Cooper, that's awesome that they gave you the royal treatment. The photo of that custom Q5 is pretty amazing. Something tells me that won't be your last visit! I'm about a month away from receiving mine. I sealed the 20" Hartmann's today and will get the "boots" mounted next week.

Re: SQ5 wheels
I 2nd that! Having read and seen the Hartmanns on this thread, I was sold. The guys at RPI are easy to deal with. Professional and prompt!
Mine arrived yesterday at the dealership and I had them mounted today. They look sick! Nice ride too. A bit more forgiving than the 21" OEM.
Now I feel like I can tackle any snow storm!

Re: SQ5 wheels
My SQ5 (off the lot) came with the 20 inch OEMs. I have an opportunity to buy a set of the 21 inch OEMs + tires brand new for $3,500 (private w/ no tax). I would throw winter tires on my OEM 20's (cost approx. $1,100). So all in this option is around $4,600, less whatever I can recover from selling the 20" Michelin Latitude summers.
Have any of you driven the SQ5 with 21's vs. 20's? Is there a discernable difference in performance and handling? I thought the 21 inch may ride a bit rough, but would be interested to hear from anyone who has test driven both.
The other option that I am looking at is throwing on Hartmann triple split 5 spoke wheels with Blizzaks for winter (all in around $2,600+tax). The difference between the two options is around $2k and I would recover some of that from selling the 20" Michelins. Man it is tempting! I like those 21's way better than the 20's!

I have the 20 inch wheels on my SQ5 as well but have been thinking about inquiring about a set of 21's.

Re: SQ5 wheels
I believe the 21" wheels only are over $1,000/wheel from Audi and the Dunlop SP Sportmax GT's that go with them are $408/tire from Tire Rack on special right now (likely much more from a dealer in Canada).
Another option if your SQ5 is fairly fresh from the dealer, is you could ask your dealer if they have any SQ5's on the lot, demos, or coming in with the 21's...and if you could trade up you current wheels for the $1,000 option upgrade.

Re: SQ5 wheels
It was a unique, lucky situation in that a local shop had received a pair via trade in from someone who bought an SQ5 and came in complaining that it came with "summer tires". They traded in the 21" OEM wheels & tires for...you won't believe it, smaller wheels and all seasons. So the shop was looking to unload the 21" trade ins. They said it was a one-off and they don't expect to ever see that again.

Thanks for the info.
I will touch base with my dealer and see if they have any SQ5's coming in with the 21's.

Re: SQ5 wheels
I agree that the 21"s make the SQ5 for 6 months out of the year. I'd suggest getting them with the initial vehicle purchase (WHEELS: 21" 5-DOUBLE-SPOKE DESIGN -inc: Tires: 21" PQ8; MSRP $1,000 while Dealer Invoice cost is $920 (x4) so you have a bit of leeway). This is for the rest of us who don't have Cooper's good fortune! The ride is fine and I did not feel any of the "hard road" feel that some have described.
Back in september the options were limited and several blogs/sites suggested the 19" for winter for better road contact ratio and higher sidewalls (235/55R19). I went with the more secure choice since this is Quebec City, we live on a hill, and I tote around 2 young kids (3 including myself). Cost at dealership for Pirelli Scorpion Winter was $312 per tire and $790 per OEM 19" wheel (5 SPOKE PARALLEL ALUMINIUM RIMS).
When things got frosty around -4C, the 21"s would roll sideways slightly when the Dunlop summer tires were cold backing out of the driveway with a 90-120 degree turn. Stopping distance way also subjectively increased with some forward sliding on a harder stop.
The 19" Pirellis are fantastic on snow and ice, although riding a 1 ton truck on ice is a completely different experience from my old A4. The look of the 19" is a bit of a downer compared to the 21". I guess once you try 21" anything is else is a step down. If I was in more clement winter conditions the 20" would definitely be my choice for winter; although anywhere in Canada you just never know what will hit you...
A lot of nice choices out there now for non OEMs as well.
55cadillacking that rim sealer is good advice; winter rims become black in no time compared to summer. I'll have to find some.
