My wife has a 2007 A4 Quatro 2T, she only has 70,000 kms., her car has a real vibration issue with the engine, I think awhile back Audi had said there was supposed to be an upgrade or service to fix this problem but her car is off warranty now being 7 years young. Do you know of any recalls or fixes they should have done for her car? Could it be the motor mounts?

I have reinstalled timing belt and rotated engine twice and everything lines up and turns easily. I will check for codes and let you know or give you a call. I didn't use lock tite on tensioner and pulleys. Should I back track and remove these items to put lock tite or will I be ok with out the lock tite when torqued properly?

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!

I will be going to look at a 2003 Audi Avant 3.0L Quattro with approx 98,000 km. The seller ( dealer and shop facility) says it has had timing belt service, new spark plugs, recent ignition coils, new alternator, new front brakes. What should we be checking out when we go to see it? could you suggest a checklist and pertinent questions? At this point we have been told to avoid 2.0T and 2.7T models. I am a previous Audi owner, 80's and 90's models and experienced the electrical and cooling system, leaky power steering problems as well as CV joint repairs. They were older models for sure. Nevertheless I enjoyed driving them. I am just trying to be a more educated shopper this time. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

Hey llsali,

Couple of questions if you don't mind.
Have you always had this issue or did it just start? Is it more of a hesitation while the car is in motion or is it a vibration when the you have your foot on the brake while the car is in drive? No CELs right?

The auto trannys are known for the vibration issue...even brand new. However, an easy way to check if the motor mounts are shot is if there is a red dye leaking from them.

If your issue is more of a hesitation, those motors are known for a leak in one of the breather PCV valves. If this is case, there was an extension of the 10yr/192km powertrain warranty.

hey bakerm,

Glad to hear the motor is back up! There's no need for locktite; proper torque will be fine. If you run into any other issues, give us a shout!

Hi Darlene,

That's very low KM for an 03 and they have covered most of the larger items (especially timing belt). Can you ask if they replaced the water pump as well? The 3.0s are fairly solid...a couple of things to look out that are areas of concern are:
-Power steering motor (hear for any whines when turning the wheel lock to lock)
-Power steering rack leak (check for swollen boots or boots that are leaking)
-Oil leaking from the valve cover gasket area
-Ensure no CEL.
-The intake runner flaps are known to break on the 3.0s
-Check the flex pipe near the catalytic converter

Aside from that, make sure all the electronic accessory bits are working and if possible ask for service records. You may also want to consider a trans service (fluid drain/refill with a new filter)

Hey Youness

1. The red T does not mean anything special. Audi changed the T from red to silver sometime in 2007...yours is just red :p
2. Timing belt should be done around the 120K mark. Check the condition of the belt ...if it looks bad/cracked for some reason do it earlier. Also, get your water pump replaced at the same time.
3. Unfortunately, we can't recommend any shops in Quebec because we dont know any :p
4. ecstuning.com has the fog light grilles
5. A visual inspection can determine the condition of your pads and rotors. When driving, do you hear metal on metal noises or feel heavy pulsation when braking hard? You can change them yourself depending on your skill level
6. You will need a OBD reader and/or VAGCOM to read/erase any codes. They will come back if you do not address the underlying issue obviously

I'm sure it's come up a million times .. but:
1. I have a leased A4 - how safe is it for me to do a VAG-COM mod? Is it going to cause problems when I return the car?

and tried to connect my Audi A4 2006 2.0T, but i the tool is not detected ( bluetooth and Wifi too ),Do you have any idea about that, because i tought that All ODB2 tool are compatible with most of cars but it seems there is an issue.
also, is someone on this Forum group Has a tool ODB2 Compatible with My Car and that works fine ?

Hey drago011,

1. If you are planning to do some of the smaller VAGCOM mods (window roll down, fog lights etc), you'll be okay. However, any modifications to the ECU or drivetrain parameters (tuning software, lowering etc) will void your warranty.
2. Stick with Ross-Tech. I understand they are pricier but in terms of comprehensive support and functionality, I have not seen an alternative. Here is a link(Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 Applications) which shows all the control modules accessible for your car through Ross-Tech

Hey greenline4,

Its possible the unit you bought is defective. Your car is compatible with OBD2..maybe try another reader? Or if you can find someone with access to VAGCOM for a more thorough scan...that would be better.

Hey greenline4,

That would be just the VAGCOM cable. You would also need the software to scan. Ross Tech is the premier manufacturer for VAG diagnostic software/hardware. The link is Ross-Tech: Home.

1. You would have a timing belt
2. The Audi interval is every 120K km but should be done earlier if the belt is cracked/frayed. With the timing belt change, you should also do the water pump, tensioner/rollers.
3. If the belt looks damaged or covered in oil, change it right away. If it was changed, there is usually a sticker near the belt covering or under the hood indicating when it was done. Do you have any service records for the vehicle? If you are completely unsure when or if it was done and a visual inspection shows deterioration, then change it.
4. Does the sound occur when the wheel is centred and you are in reverse?

Yes we are located in Toronto (motorfabrik.ca)

4. And this sound does not occur in drive? Just when you are in reverse and the car is actually moving backwards?
5. Unfortunately, it looks like the pixels for that part of the display on the cluster are shot. Rare but it happens.
6. Your fog lights are supposed to come on. Check the wiring for the one that is off or possibly a bulb issue.
7. Sport mode holds each gear a little longer...better acceleration pretty much

Hey greenline4,

4. If possible, open the hood and have another person with you to try and determine where the sound is coming from. Reverse slowly and turn the wheel lock to lock. If the sound is coming from the engine bay itself, it may be a tensioner squeeling under load. Odd though that it is only in reverse.
5. Sorry I do not understand. Can you reword please?
6. If both fog lights turn on when the car is started, that it is normal

Ask away!

Hi there. I have a 2004 Audi A4 convertible. The car is in great shape. The windscreen that came with the car ( for behind the seats ) is starting to show its age. It has 2 holes in the screen and a third one forming now. Am I able to replace this screen. There is a rubber piece that holds the screen into the frame ( much like on your house window ) but when I try to get it out it seems like it is glued in. I don't want to damage it by trying to pry it out as it will look bad after I'm done. Do you have any tips on whether this can even be done. I'm guessing a new screen from Audi is going to be very pricey.
Thanks for your help.

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout of appreciation to the guys at MotorFabrik.

They did my timing belt job on my 2004 Audi A6 4.2 yesterday.
Very professional, friendly and knowledgeable.

The guys are great, work was done very technically and sound, and the price was fantastic.

Any of you forum members who are "iffy" or undecisive on trying MotorFabrik for your service, rest assured they know what they're doing.

Thanks again guys and we'll see you soon.

Hey Reggie,

If we are talking about the same screen ( PN# 8H0862953), repairing it depends on your handyness :p. To be honest, those were not designed to be repaired; just replaced more or less. You may be able to patch the smaller holes but an entire panel is a bit difficult. The only way to really remove a panel is to carefully cut on the edges, find a suitable replacement material and silicone seal the new panel to the frame.

Hi damo,

How did they stop working? In mid-wipe?

You will want to find out if the wiper motor is shot or has the linkage/transmission broke at some point? Much rarer is an electrical issue from the combi switch itself.

Hi MF. Just to update you on my heating and AC issues from page 10 & 11 of this thread. I did trace it down to my flap motors and wrote up a DYI fix for it. Now there are no motor noises from under the dash and it seems like my heating and AC is blowing like it should.

FYI for anyone else with motor and clicking noises from under the dash:

Glad to hear veedub and great write up!

Out of curiosity, did the VAGCOM output test show the motors out of spec?

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!

Thanks MF. I'm always glad to help others help themselves.

No it didn't but I knew exactly what I was dealing with because I found a rough schematic of the flap motor assemblies a while ago but only attempted it now because the weather's been nice. So I did it in my driveway. I only used VAGCOM to determine which motor assembly was throwing codes. And they matched right up to the motors making the noises.

It was the pots that were out of spec by giving intermittent readings. The motors and gears were perfectly fine. It's typical behaviour for aging pots in my experiences. That's why they make contact cleaners.

The Radio and rear speakers have been installed, although both rear speakers worked when installed , only the right rear works now , why I'm not sure but I'll get it figured out, just thought I give some details.
Now some 2-days after the installation the alarm system has decided to start going off intermittently.
ie; 4-ways blinking and horn going off.

Hey gary,

Why is your motor being replaced? Oil burning or something else? What sort of oil change intervals were you doing?

As to whether you should keep the car...its ultimately your decision but a couple of questions. Whats the mileage on the replacement motor? Who determined a new motor was needed?

If you do decide to keep it, the best preventative maintenance you can do is oil changes with a quality syn motor oil and OEM filter at 7K km maximum. Any more than that and you are risking wear to the piston rings.

With the install were the correct harnesses used? Also depending on the A4 model, there is an amp under the left rear speaker which needs a harness as well.

Out of curiosity, was the key sense wired up properly?
The 4 ways and horn going off intermittently sound like a wiring issue...was the alarm module (located in the trunk) touched in any way?
A VAGCOM scan of the alarm module could also yield some clues as to whats going on.
