Any inherent commonalities with these cars? Odd inherent tweaks or what not? Longer warm up times? Keep on top of tranny fluid changes if you are planning to keep the car!

Good man...the motor will thank you every 6-7K :-P.

Because Audi has never really made a top-rated supercharger, keep an eye on the belt as the KMs pile on. Try and avoid driving it hard right away...thorough warm up in the colder weather. Of course, keep on top of your regular maintenance schedule and you should be okay.

Another point is the HPFP and senors are sensitive...if you notice excessive fuel consumption, get the issues addressed right away...if not you will start to build up carbon. I've always been a fan of Shell 91 but to each his own :-P.

APR has a good package...but heads up, once you're on the mod road, its hard to stop lol!

I currently have a Mercedes S55 AMG and I'm considering going to an Audi A8l. I've been looking at the 2007 model as being realistic in price and new enough for me. Does the '07 engine have a chain for the cams or is it still the old rubber belt system? What should I be looking for when testing or examining the vehicle? what is a realistic price to pay for a Pre Purchase Inspection.?

I'd certainly appreciate responses to these questions.

Is there a way to reset the computer for oil change intervals.? Does Audi set it at 25k intervals?

Hey there,

After 2005, the moved to a chain system. As such, they don't need replacement until the cams detect deviation or play. Best way to maintain them is to keep on top of your oil changes and use a good quality syn oil.

For the A8, there are a couple things you want to keep your eye on. Aside from the usual (condition of body, interior), you will want to ensure the calipers are in good condition...the A8 uses an electronic parking brake that if not used can seize. When doing your PPI, make sure every module is functioning (sunroof, heated mirrors, air suspension etc). There are a lot of little convenience options that get used/abused and replacement can be costly. If possible, get the service records to find out if maintenance and oil changes were done.

PPIs are usually about 1.5hrs so depending on where you take the car...for instance, we would charge 125$ as a reference.

Audi set the oil change intervals to 15K. If you are handy with VAGCOM, you are able to adjust them down to about half that.

All gears and while the clutch is disengaged. Could it be motor mounts?

No not at 26K, the next 15K service interval on the MMI says to be done around 36K or 37K. I was thinking I should do one at about 29K or 30K with Motul or Liqui-Moly to see if it makes any difference before the pre-purchased 15K service from Audi Care. In the meantime, I'm down about 2 steps on the MMI oil indicator (w/ ~2400km so far) and I was going to wait until it gets to the halfway point to add half a litre. Or maybe let it go until the MMI display shows 0 but before the "add oil" warning light chimes.

Well theres no set figure but as a rule of thumb on a -20 day, you would want to wait at least 8-10min. Everyone has their own opinion (especially on not wasting gas at idle) but on very cold days, you want to let the motor warm up to operating temps; as well as letting the motor heat warm up the steering/transmission/suspension components. We've had good luck with the Motul and Liqui-Moly a close second...unfortunately none of the 1L bottles in stock as of today but will get more next week.

Of course, come by if you get stuck...just give us a heads up!
8-10min? Wow, that is far longer than I would've ever guessed!

Hey ggronfors,

Faulty motor mounts would definitely contribute to the vibration you were feeling, however would not create the power loss you mentioned. Because the mounts are electronic, they will throw a hard code to the ECU but no CEL. If you have access to VAGCOM, you actually scan the mounts and see if they are in spec or not.

Gotch ya! You definitely should not wait until the 'add oil' light comes up...try and keep it topped off as best you can.

There are no hard rules but on the colder days we've had in the city, letting the car warm up 8-10mins not only lets it get to operating temperature but the heat from the motor warms up suspension and steering components. It also helps all the rubber gaskets/seals to gradually expand. Again, on the colder days, even when your vehicle is warmed up...drive it gingerly so oil pressure builds up.

I have one for you Mr. MotorFabrik

2002 A4 1.8T...Blanca. Ran very well until...
last month I lost heat completely... 2weeks ago she started ideling rough and misfiring. now getting less than 250 miles on a full tank 15-16 MPG!

At idle the CEL flashed at me and I drove to the nearest shop. Dealership!
Diagnosed misfire in cyl 3 and intermitant misfires that seemed to move around. 3rd cyl consistantly. checked coils, were OK. replaced spark plugs...still misfiring. advised me to change injector in cyl 3 only...$400.

Blanca is APR tuned Stage 1. I purchased 4 TT225 injectors and reflashed to Stage 1+...$380. Blanca still misfires. disconnected MAF, no difference. looked for vacuum leaks, none visible.

Prior to loss of heat.
-blew coolant hose while driving and car shut down.
-replaced hose & CTS (green one)
-fan blowing immediately when car starts...it's been below 20 degrees much of the month. battery dead each morning.
-replaced battery

…later I found major leaking Breather hose, replaced... also replaced pancake valve and pump/valve on PCV system. Still misfire. The RPM when idling stays flat yet I hear the misfire. the car bogs below 3k RPM. Seems to open open up well beyond 3k RPM. Gas mileage is less than 12 MPG...was getting 22 to 26 MPG.

Hello,

I have a 2009 Audi A3 and I would like to ask two questions:

1) Are Alignments only done properly at the Audi dealers?
2) I dont feel the heated seats, what are some of the things that can cause the seats to not heat. My wife has a Rabbit and i can feel the heated seats no matter what setting.

Thanks,

Hey Rabbit2A4,

Whats the mileage on the car? Any CELs right now?

Obviously there are a couple issues going on at the same time here. With respect to heat, those A4s are notorious for heater core clogging. That may be whats going on...assuming your cooling system and thermostat are ok.

With respect to the misfire, the first thing I would suggest is return the car to default by disabling the APR tune. When you got the tune, they would have provided you a code and procedure through the dash to do so. If not, disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes should return it to default (IIRC). How did the dealer determine the coils were ok? Sometimes they crack and its so fine...almost invisible to the naked eye.
Additionally, if you have determined coils and plugs are 100% ok and the misfire remains in cylinder 3, you have to check that cylinder/piston via leakdown/compression test.

Hey DrewLocks,

(1) There are a lot of independent alignment places that do an excellent job. Unless your dealership has an alignment rack/machine, there is a good chance they send it out to an independent place anyways :p.
(2) When you say you do not feel them, are you implying they do not work or they are not as warm as the Rabbit? If they do not work, is it both seats that failed?

Heated seats are comprised of a thermostat/temp sensor, heater coil/element and the related wiring. If you have one seat that is not working, its possible there is damage to the wiring or the connector has become loose or a failed temp sensor. The coil itself rarely fails outright. Additionally, if you have access to VAGCOM, you are able to probe it and see if it is operating within spec.

If both seats are not working, first check the fuse for them.

Finally, the max temperature setting for the seats is about 40 degrees C.

In order to change the camshaft seals at the front of the engine(closest to the radiator) is the following the simplest order, or what would you recommend?

Car in the service position, crank at DTC and locked. Timing belt removed, install cam locking bar, remove cam sprockets and then change cam seals.

thx Peter

Thanks MotorFabrik. I have 125k on the car. All 4 cyl now misfire p0301/302/304 + p0101.
CEL on all the time and CEL blinks when at idle or below 2k RPM. I also have the ESP indicator on (i assumed it was something when I had my front wheel bearings replaced). In the last 3 months I changed all 4 coils, 4 plugs (platinum expensive ones) replaced all 4 injectors. Cleaned MAF, Throttle Body, replaced thermostat, replaced broken Crankcase Breather hose off of Oil Filter housing, PCV valve, suction pump, 2 hoses. My gas mileage is still sub 12mpg. I am think of replacing MAF and possibly MAP sensor.

Hey Peter,

Make sure you have the right cam tool before hand. You pretty much have the procedure but it may be easier to lock the crank, then cam and then remove the belt.
When you install the new seals, be careful to ensure they are fitted right. Other than that, keep us updated with your progress!

Hey Rabbit,

Not singling you out here...more of a general FYI...but VAG MAFs are not meant to be cleaned. BMW/Benz you can get away with but VAG are meant to be replaced.

Aside from that, because you are getting a 0101...disconnect the MAF, disconnect the battery and discharge. Wait 10-15 minutes and start the car again with the MAF disconnected...through VAGCOM, see if the MAF is operating within spec. If not, time for a new MAF.

Secondly, again through VAGCOM, check the injector pulse...I want to try and rule out ECM issues.

Finally, check the condition of the wires going to the coils. Over time, with the heat of the motor and when replacing coils, they become brittle and break internally. You may have to open the harness and check each wire...a bit of a chore but the only way to rule it out.

By any chance, did they have their windshield replaced? If so, were the rain senors included on the replacement? Also, check for any obstruction over the senors..dirt/grime etc.
If you would like, come by and we can VAGCOM the sensors and see if they are operating within spec...no charge/obligation!

By the way, have you had any battery/alternator issues with the RS4?

My high mileage A6 sputtered and started running very roughly. Engine light came on flashing and several other warning lights came on ( traction control, PCL? ). I limped into the dealership and the call back was not good news. They indicated that their initial scan points to the cam timing, but that to do a full investigation it would take an additional 4 hours!!! of scanning and work to see what the problem is. They suggested it may need a new engine and provided a ball park in excess of $10,000. It's a bit of a shock to me. The car is a 2006 and in great shape other than a lot of highway kilometers. Wouls appreciate a comment on how to proceed. Thanks.

Hey A6Lover,

Important questions: which motor is in your car and whats the mileage?

Were you driving when the lights came on/car started sputtering?

Did the dealership provide you with any VAGCOM codes?

Hearing cam timing, its possible the chains have stretched. Does not necessarily mean you need a new motor though. Even if valves have touched the pistons...then there is the possibility of getting the head machined.

Highly suggest you get a second opinion before proceeding...because we are on the forums to help out members here, if you'd like to bring the car here we can figure out some options for you no charge or obligation.

Hey G35dalf,

Not a problem...here to help out as much as we can!

When Audi transitioned to the B8 chassis, there were major component and internal changes. B7 and backward there was a lot of compatibility (pretty much 1996-2008 a lot things were straight swap and direct functionality). It would have been a lot simpler going from B8 A3 to B8 A4.

With your 8V steering wheel, the harness will be different. You'll also need a new steering wheel control unit and slip ring. Button functionality will be contingent on modifying the harness and making it communicate with the RS4...(on the A3 wheel there are buttons for controlling the MMI, volume/voice control, navigation and a programmable extra button).

Additionally, from what I remember, the A3 wheel is shallower and different locations for screws...you may have an issue with fitting the airbag.

VAGCOM can only really help to clear an airbag light if it is triggered during install and some coding afterwards.

The swap is doable but you have to make sure you have the right parts...and some patience :p

Hey Buster1,

We had a chance to look at your other posting regarding the noisy valvetrain. No CEL right?

Who did your last oil change and what is your regular oil change intervals? Because it is a cartridge filter, its possible the o-ring shifted and/or the housing was wrenched too tight and distorted the filter; creating a blockage and triggering the oil pressure light.

The other issue you may have is your pick up screen may be plugged/clogged with sludge/metal filings. By any chance, have you done the camshaft 196k/10yr warranty through Audi? There are known issues with the cam follower being worn on those cars.

Finally, if you'd like and have the time (I know its a bit of a drive from Oshawa) but swing by and we can take a look at whats going on with no obligation.

Another Compression Check and... cylinder 2 has no compression. Head gasket fail, valve(s) gone. Need to rebuild.

Hey Rabbit,

You didn't snap a belt anytime? Was the plug thread stripped?

Hey MotoFabrik - thanks very much for the info... would you have the required part numbers and would I be able to order them through you?

Thanks very much, you're a great asset to the forum!

I did the last oil change , bought the car with 91000 k on it with a fresh oil change when I got it and the issue first occurred with 100000 K oil level was fine , pulled it in the garage and changed the oil anyways , nothing visibly wrong with filter . This past monday after the car sat for 1 week after returning from a trip car had 103000 k . Happened on initial start up shut it down and restarted a couple of times and noise gone and runs fine . No CEL either time but definite lack of throttle response when I blipped it a couple of times which tells me valves where not opening fully . Lifter issue ?

I'm looking to change the head light "wink" to the dimming feature, I need to get into Vag Com to do this. Any chances I could bring the car by your shop once I pick it up in May?

There is a link on here that explains how to change it, seems pretty easy.
