Hey Mike,

In short, after the B7 chassis and again with the introduction of new dealer software in 2013, there is no flash that is completely undetectable by Audi. The dealership may not see that ECU parameters have been changed on very cursory glances but with a deeper probe, the changes will show up to dealer techs. Additionally, once VAG knows you have modified the car, it will be flagged and they will be within their rights to deny/void your warranty.

Furthermore, if you take your flashed car in to the dealership for a regular software update and do not inform them of the flash, the tech will over-write your flash.

Hi,

I just bought a used 2000 Audi A4 1.8T Avante F/lift and have only today left to register it. Roadworthy can't find the engine number. I have managed to locate the first three letters of the engine number but where do I find the other 6 digits of the remainder of the number? Please help and thanks a mill!

Hi Spokie,

Are you looking for the vehicle identification number (VIN)? Its visible through the windshield on the drivers side (looking from outside). Also its printed on the drivers side door jamb...there is a sticker with date of manufacture, VIN, etc

Hi,
Sometimes when I start the car the engine goes on and starts very fast making a sudden "vroooom" noise. Lool I am trying hard to explain it. It's hard.
Normally I hear the car trying to start and it starts smooth. My hand will be on the ignition for no longer than half to 3/4 of a sec. Just once in a while it takes less than that time. It weird because there is a loud noise that come out. Do you know why that could be happening?

Hey farrous13,

You'll have to help us out a bit more here :p. When you say theres a loud noise that comes out ...its not a metallic noise is it? Or does the motor just sound 'louder' when starting normally?

I don't hear any metallic noise. The noise coming from the engine at the time when the engine starts is the noise I am talking about. The car will start faster sometimes. It doesn't take long when I crank the ignition. Faster than normal. It doesn't happen often. So it is hard for me to catch it on video.
When the car starts fast (faster than normal), the engine makes a louder noise than on a normal start. Hope I can catch it on video as the weather is better now.

Does that help

I have found the VIN. I am looking for the engine number for the block. I have also found the number for the head but can't seem to find the number for the engine block. I know it is somewhere below the oil filter on the right and I know I have to remove the water bottle to see it but still can't find it. Can you help me?

Hi MotorFabrik,

Today I was on my way to an advanced driver course, when about 1 km from home the car started shuddering. :( The ECP light came on, then the engine light came on solid. The car would hardly run under 2000 rpm, it jumped and jerked and shudddered. I turned around and limped it home.

Last week I had the APR stage 1 upgrade. I am not sure if this is related. I reset the ECU back to stock to see if that would resolve the issue. No change. I do not have a device to read the codes. I can not drive it, so will have to get it towed into the shop.

Any idea what it may be.

hey farrous,

It helps slightly...a video would help out a lot more. There is no CEL right?

How does it idle when it starts up faster? Does it happen after the car sits for a while? All you are hearing is a louder motor? Not a starter or leaky exhaust right?

Still need a bit more info but something that could lead to a louder/high-rev start up would be a faulty coolant temp sensor..the computer dumps extra fuel on start up.

Ahh I see..which 1.8T do you have? For the AWM, you have to remove both the coolant tank and disconnect the harness underneath. Just three screws for the tank and be careful with the harness. There is another black harness that has to be unplugged right on top of where the serial number is located. Get a flash light and from the side you should be able to read it. May have to spray some degreaser and squeze a rag in there to clean up the area.

hey taylor,

The EPC (electronic power control) could be a number of things...usually an issue with either the throttle body/position, MAF, accelerator pedal (and sometimes very rarely coils/plugs). Reading the CEL would point us in the right direction pretty much instantly.
First thing to check if you can is remove the MAF. Once removed, run the car...does it make a difference?
If it is the MAF, do not try and clean it...has to be replaced.
Keep the tune stock until the issue can be resolved.
Sucks missing the course :(

I have had a small coolant leak for the past few week and as long as I kept coolant in it everything was fine. Well a couple of days ago I lost the coolant cap and drove with it off for a handful of miles, the car shut off and now will not start. I poured coolant back in it and got a new cap but still it won't start, the interior dash blinks few good amount of times and when I turn the key there is just a few empty clicks that sounds. My friend is telling me that the alternator needs to be replaced.

Does anyone know what may have happened and perhaps what I should do about this little predicament?

Thanks

Hi MF
Just got myself into a bind. While changing my camshaft tensioner the tension tool broke after I removed tensioner and camshafts on driver side. The marks came off of the camshaft sprockets and chain came off so now I have no way of lining them up for proper timing. Is there a way to line them up once this happens? My concern is how will I know if valves are in proper position even if I have 16 rollers between the camshafts sprockets once I reassemble the camshafts and tensioner? Or are valves not under a lot of tension when locked at TDC. I also had the crankshaft lock tool installed. I did fine a diagram showing the notches on crankshafts and they lined these up with 16 rollers between them. Will this work or is there more involved? Below is the link for the diagram and a picture of how I would line up my camshafts once I replace chain. Wings on cams will also be in correct position(large holes facing in).

Hi MF,
coil pack on #3 cyl was gone. No other issues. I had them replace the other 3 at the same time. Cost was 70.00 for the 3 coil packs, labour was covered under warranty.

All good in the A3 again. Thanks for the follow up:D

Hi, MFabrik I have a quick question regarding my 2009 A6 3.0T car, love it and am enjoying driving it. Hope you can enlighten me.

Concern is every 2500 to 3000 KM i keep getting sign that oil is low, is this normal.
I have checked the oil dipstick when the car is cold and warm, and both time the oil was just above the min level, put in 1/2 to 3/4 of litre and oil level is back to normal for the next 3000 Km.

Question is does this car really burn that much oil within just 3K of driving, are other people having to do the same then it gives me a bit of relief that its not just my car.

Please provide me feedback on this.....

thanks

Hey Bakerm,

After reviewing what you have shared we think it would be best if you could email us pictures of Cylinder One at TDC with the cam lobe positions. If you have not put them in yet we can attempt to walk you through the process.

I haven't put them in yet. I ordered another tool to compress tensioner. I will check back with a picture before I assemble. Thanks for the reply.

Hi,

I have a 2004 A4 1.8T and a few days ago, my check engine light came on. A few days later, my low coolant warning popped up. After allowing the engine to cool down, i added some coolant to my tank. i looked undeneath the car, no leak. Today i was driving, and once again the warning came on and the temperature gauge jumped from 90-130! Upon getting home, i once again let it cool down and i saw my level of cooland was fine! Does anyone know what the problem could be? is it just a faulty sensor or is my engine really overheating? Help!

Thanks, Mike

Hey Imeeaudi,

The empty clicks suggest a dead battery. Rule of thumb is one click is the starter, multiple clicks when trying to turn over the car is the battery.

It is quite possible the alternator is not charging the battery and does need to be replaced and a simple output test can determine if the alternator is faulty or not.

Now with the coolant issue, were there any signs of overheating before the car shut down?

Hi Hetal,

What is the mileage currently on your A6? The other questions I have is what is your oil change interval? Are you following the Audi 15K?

Hey Mike,

Would you have access to VAGCOM by any chance or able to read that CEL? Do your fans spin in normal operation?

There is a warm up test cycle available through VAGCOM which would be able to determine whether there is a faulty temp sensor at play. Also, have you taken a look at the water pump for any signs of leakage?

Mike,
Here is 2 pic of how I have the cams lobes aligned at tdc. This is using the old chain. It appears to me that I may have one roller to many because the cam mark on the intake side does not line up with the mark on the cam cap but it does on the exhaust side at tdc. The third picture is a copy of what I think lobes should look like at TDC?? If I shorten by one roller I think I would be ok?

The MMI ribbon from your RS4 wheel is 4F0971589B. It visually looks the same as 8U0971589A but that does not mean it is 100% compatible.

If the harness is included, then its just a matter finding out the pin outs and modding them if necessary.

MotorFabrik,
You were dead on. Harness fit and MMI ribbon plugged in perfectly.
Only problem is, I don't know how to repin the harness to get the MMI working. The wheel fits, works, feels and looks great. Well worth the upgrade.

Hey bakerm,

There should be 16 rollers on to on...shortening will not help and most likely throw a code for cam position.

Here is a picture of how they should be:
File:Cam timing chains.gif - Ross-Tech Wiki

Also, the lobes seem to be off in all the pictures. Attached is a picture of a 1.8 we are working on...notice how the lobes are angled towards each other?

Regarding the rollers on your motor, if you take the CCT off, it might pull them together so the marks line up at TDC.

Hello MF
It appears the picture you posted is the passenger side. I can't position the lobes on the drivers side to face each other and have the marks on the cams line up with the marks on the cap.
Is bank 1 the driver side on the diagram? The cam on my exhaust side does line up as shown but the intake cam mark lines up with the valley instead of the tooth. So if I move the intake cam one tooth, the marks will line up on both cams. The picture below is of a 2.7 l driver side.

Hey G35dalf,

As long as the airbag harness is disconnected and you are working in a static-free environment (discharge yourself); you should be okay against accidental airbag deployment. Modding the MMI harness depends on the pin outs...would you be able to check what the layout is? It should be marked on the connector
