That's messed up. I've never heard of anything like that ever happening. I wonder if there was a defect in the clutch.

You're going to have to get it done at the dealership, I don't know of anyone who has had one cut at another place however the dealership should be able to cut you a regular key instead of a switchblade remote key.

If you have a new one cut (90$),you will need to have that key programmed (+/- 60$), with all your other keys at the same time. As far as I know, only the dealer can program keys...

A clutch is made of a few parts and yes they can break in some situations. What actually broke, was in the pressure plate or the disk? I have broken many a pressure plate spring by using the rev-limiter as a shift point and side stepping the clutch. This was in a A2 GTI which is pretty light but when you look at the weight of an Audi it wouldn't take a lot of effort to damage the clutch. Once something starts going it doesn't really take much to keep it going until it is destroyed. As they say, things typically go from bad to worse than better.

How do you drive the car? If you are heavy on the left foot and shift hard then you can physically break the clutch especially on a heavier car. Many of the newer cars also use a lot of dampners in the clutch so it engages easier and these can also wear allowing more movement in the pressure plate/clutch disk and this can also cause damage when pushed. If you are one of these people who use the clutch to hold the car in place on a hill then you can also bake the clutch and then weaken the metal with heat which will also kill the clutch.

Also, I don't really trust mechanics so I don't put a lot of faith in anything they say unless I see it for my own eyes. I have worked in the automotive industry for a long time and seen some pretty tall tails come out of some mechanics mouthes. That aside clutches can break but it is usually related to either abuse in some form or a defective part as noted in the thread above.

Do you have pics of the old parts? It would be interesting to see what failed and what the likely cause may be. Just saying the clutch broke doesn't really say much, its what broke and how it did it that answers questions.

hmmm not to tech savy, but i think it was the clutch plate..i have it sitting in my car right now...it broke into 4 pieces...what ever the thinker piece is, thats the one that broke. If you are a mechanic and can tell me how an accident might have caused that it would be help, cus insurance doesn't want to pay. It happened at the exact same time as i got rear ended by a dump truck

I know I already posted my opinion about the general mechanic so you don't even want to get me going on insurance people. It basically comes down to this, insurance companies make money by paying for as little as they can. To answer your question in less than 100 words, yes, your clutch can be broken by being rear-ended by any vehicle especially a huge truck.

The part that is broken is called a pressure plate, this device has a cover that is rivited to a plate that is spring loaded and forces the clutch disk against the flywheel. By doing this you can transmit power from the motor to the driveline and stop it by pushing in the clutch pedal and releasing it. I forget the technical name of the part on the pressure plate that rides against the clutch disk but this part is strapped to the pressure plate cover which is bolted to the flywheel. These little straps allow for movement between the cover and the part that rides against the disk so you don't get harsh engagements and there is a little play so things don't break. If you look closely at the big metal part that rides against the clutch disk you will see that it is cast and the area where it is attached to the pressure plate cover is just some ears sticking out which easily break off.

Still with me? Now, image this same clutch being rammed from behind and instead of these little plates asorbing this shock they just snap all of the ears off and then no clutch. The shock of being hit from behind isn't just take up with the body of the car, it is taken up by everything in line with the crash. If you had the brakes hammered to the floor you can damage suspension or brake parts. If the car was in gear and the clutch was out then you can also damage driveline parts, engine/transmission mounts, and even pressure plates.

Look at the design of what is broken and think of how else all of that energy can be aborbed? If the car was in gear and then you were hit (especially if the accident increased your speed) then I can see this collision damaging the pressure plate as you describe.

I am sure that you can speak with the insurance company and explain this to them. You can also ask different mechanics if this is 'theorically' possible, explain how the accident happened and what the end result was. Unless I missed the mark 100% from what you say I think it could be caused by the accident. Pics may help determine this.
