Default Mechatronic ECU or gearbox sensor failure

.

2010 S5 Cab with S-Tronic 7 Speed.

Hi there,

I recently received a "Gearbox malfunction. Limited functionality. You may continue driving" error on my 2010 S5. Just over 80k km's. It disappeared and has popped back up again.

A scan of various forums seems to indicate a wide issue with 2009-11 DSG transmissions (Mechatronic ECU or sensor failure?). And that there may be a program in place to assist owners.

Are you familiar with such? Do I need to head to a dealer to deal with something like this?

Thanks!

Default 2011 Audi A8 Premium Plus

I would like to know the meaning of "Premium Plus" on a 2011 Audi A8? What were the differences between a "Premium Plus" and a "Premium" on an A8 back then? Many thanks.

Ask away!
I have a CPO 2007 A4 with a 2.0 L engine that is consuming oil. The mileage is approx. 75,000 KM; Audi has recommended having a two stage oil consumption test done by the dealer with a cost of $800. My question is whetehr this is a worthwhile test and if you know of anyone having it done with corrective follow-on action by Audi actually solving the problem. I am concerned that at the end of the testing they say the consumption is normal or i am on the hook for major repairs as the car is just out of the extended warranty May 2014.

Hi Leon,

I had a chance to look over your post...you've done most of the leg work . The brake pressure sensor issue is fairly common on the A3s. A suggestion though, try driving and activate Cruise Control, does it engage? If it does activate, does it shut off when the brakes are tapped? This will rule out the brake light switch.

However, based on your VCDS results, when the brake pressure constantly reads high, it has more than likely failed. There is a repair kit available...you just have to figure out if you have an ATE or Bosch master cylinder.

Hi Peter,

There is indeed a 6 speed conversion available for the B5 A4 2.8; however, some of the parts may be hard to come by. Aside from the parts below, you will have the code the ECU to accept the existence of a 6th gear and for cruise control.

You'll need:
- 01E transmission
- 01E bellhousing spacer
- 01E shifter linkage, stabilizer bar and crossorod
- 01E clutch and flywheel and pressure plate
- 01E throwout bearing release arm
- 01E transmission mount brackets (bracket from tranny mounts to tranny housing)
- 01E shifter box and shifter
- 01E driveshaft heatshield
- B5 S4 rear diff from 6 speed
- B5 S4 driveshaft from 6 speed
- B5 S4 front axles from 6 speed
- B5 S4 or B5 A4 V6 uprights (to fit the S4 axles)

(credit to Max034 for the list)

Hey pdks,

Have you had a chance to scan the transmission for the codes which triggered the message? Does the car seem like its holding the gear (RPMs jump) before shifting?

Having said that, there was an issue with the earlier V1 Mechatronic units wherein the message would pop up (usually within the first ~20K km). Audi provided a V2 Mechatronic which corrected the issue and moved to a separate two loop lubrication system to avoid contamination/damage of the Mechantronics.

It is important to service and maintain the S-Tronic transmission (which we do perform), every 50K or so with new hypoid oil/filter and pickup tube/gasket. However, because you are just slightly out of warranty, you may want to try and get the issue corrected under goodwill through Audi Canada. (there was a 100K/6yr extended campaign on the powertrain for the US). If they do accept your claim, ensure that they change out the filter/pick up tube during service to the Mechatronic unit.

If you are denied coverage (and assuming it is indeed the Mechantronic) you may consider purchasing the V2 Mechatronic unit from Audi and having it installed at an independent.

Hi kha,

Unfortunately we just service Audis and do not sell them...your local Audi dealership will be able to provide a thorough answer to your question.

Hi Barry,

How much oil are you consuming? For your reference, Audi considers ~1L of consumption every 1K normal; so if you are around this mark, there is not much that they will do in terms of further corrective action.

If your car does fail the OC1 and OC2 tests, the full remedy would be a replacement of the piston/piston rings/crank seal and pcv (assuming Audi authorizes a repair and the only way is through failure of the tests). Now your A4 is out of warranty which makes it tougher to argue for the repair (it is costly). There have been instances where customers have got the full repair but it does involve wrangling.

In the mean time, switching over to a 10w-60 syn with OEM filter (you need to warm up the car for a longer period in colder temps), doing oil changes every 7K and tracking your oil consumption between changes would be a good band-aid solution.
