Hey latchkeykid, good to see you here. This is Richard in C.R. Hi to all the other 5000 owners. Right now our 5K Quattro (NF - no turbo) is primarily my wife's car but it becomes my toy (and daily driver) after I get her an A6 or Allroad later this summer. Our beast is pretty much stock, 315,000 km, not one speck of rust, engine never opened, first clutch change at 309K, struts and shocks last year. Needs some small bits here and there to make perfect. It has been our primary vehicle since 2001 and it has served us extremely well. There have been a few things I have had to replace outside of regular maintenance and wear and tear items but all said and done, over the past 7 years, I have spent less than $1,500 a year on average on this car excluding fuel and insurance - for a 20 year old car, I think that's pretty darned good!
I have a headlight upgrade project in progress and will post pictures and fabrication/installation notes once it is done. Hopefully by next week.

Hey Richard! Always good to hear from the other member of the Vancouver Island old Audi society . I'll be stripping down and crushing another 5kt in the next while so fire me a list of those parts you wanted.

Hey I am fairly new to this web site. I have been looking on the internet for
5000 information. I recently purchased a 87 5000CS 2.2 10v "MC" Turbo 5cyl
FWD automatic with 106000km's (Canadian Model) Its got all the bells and whistles. I can find lots of info on the Quattro Turbo models but nothing in reguards to the FWD Automatics. I can find info on the Automatics FWD 5000's but none of them show with the 2.2 5cyl 10V Turbo. The car itself is in fantastic shape (Its only got 106k on it stored in a garage driven every other sunday) As far as I can tell with the extreme lack of info on 5000 Turbo automatics on the net I would assume it is really rare with this set up in Canada.
If anyone happens to know of web sites on the net with reguards to getting more performance
(higher boost etc...) out of the car let me know. I can find tons of info on the 5speed quattros but nothing about setting up and Automatic. Any help would be great
Thanx
Craig

Hi Craig,

Try the Audiworld and SJM Technik websites. Audiworld forums cover the whole spectrum of models and have very active forums, SJM is parts supplier/repair facility with a fantastic section on diagnostics.

The turbo auto fwd cars are quite common, I just parted and crushed one this week so if you're in need of anything and in BC give me a shout.

As for performance upgrades, it CAN be done with a chip upgrade to the ECU and a stronger wastegate spring (good for 50-ish HP) but it is so NOT recommended on cars with the slushbox as they are already at their limit having been designed for a much lighter car. We did it once for gits n shiggles, the car chirped it's tires while shifting but you could feel the strain through the driveline, good fun and a great way to blow a transmission to bits!

Find a clean turbo quattro, then you're in business.

Wow that was a fast reply to the post.

I need advise on my car the 1 thing that is making me really nervous
about it is the oil pressure light comes on @ 2800-2900rpm. As soon as the RPM drops to 2700 it goes off. When I drove the car home from where I bought it from. I never really put my foot into it as It had been sitting for over a year and took it easy it had a slight knock to it (no oil at the top from sitting went away after a couple minutesof driving home).
I got it home did the basic of checking all the hoses/belts etc....
I changed the air filter / spark plugs / cap & rotor and a fresh oil change.
Took it for a spin and down the block the knocking stopped and the oil pressure warning light popped up @ 2900. I turned around went home. I started looking on the internet and I have been told that the oil pressure sensors fail on them. I have been looking for the location of them but with little luck finding them (I guess I need to look harder). I was extremly nervous about this as I have read that most engines have calved @ 20km or so if it is an oil pressure is not there.
I drove the car a total of 70+km so far (drive home and a couple spins around the block) and no knocks no pinging nothing that sound like the engine is being starved of oil (except for the warning light/buzzer) My father in-law is a heavy duty mech and will be helping me with most of the work on the car as I need it. He has worked on tons of turbo vehicles and advised that If their was and issue with the oil pressure that with the distance I drove it would of already calved the motor. I know their is probably a ton of posts on oil pressure issues and warning lights just having a hard time locating in reguards to the 87' 5000 location of the sensors and how to check the sensors. You seem to know alot about the 5000's and was wondering if this a common problem with them? What would you suggest I do as I am really not looking forward to towing the car back to the city to an Audi dealership to diagnose to tow it back over to the father In-law's to get the work done. I just don't want to bite the bullit if I don't have too.
Any direction on this would be fantastic.
Thanx again

The site fires me an email when this thread has any action...

The oil pressure sensor is on the driver's side of the engine, just below the thermostat housing IIRC, it's a simple electrical sensor with a single wire, shouldn't cost more than $20 new or a buck from a wrecker. I've never heard of an Audi 5cyl dying from lack of oil pressure so relax and welcome to the world of Audi ownership, get used to sensors failing, electrical gremlins and fun with mechanical fuel injection.

Have a good read through the SJM site, find a Bentley manual for the car on Ebay and start going through the car front to back. If the car has been sitting that long get yourself a new fuel filter, the good Bosch one and get ready for the next thing to go on it.

The cars are great but a complete and total pain in the *** due to all the electronic crap that fails on your way to work, while it's snowing, you're hungover and the wife is out of town.

Try to avoid spending any real money on it, drive it for as long as you can and then move on to a nice dependable car. I've had my fair share of old Audis, if I've learned anything it's to buy the best car you can for the money and not ever try to ressurrect somebody else's failed project as in the end you are still left with a car that these days is barely worth much more than scrap value...even in near perfect condition.

HTH

Yeah over the weekend I went and bought a repair manual for the car
You are soo right on the value of the cars I grabbed mine for $500.00cdn
And it's in really minty shape in fact when I went to go pick up the car the
previous owner had it parked out front in his driveway and I was thinking for sure that he was going to open the garage door and the car he was talking about was going to be sitting inside all beat up but when he walked over to the car my mouth dropped as I could not beleave that he only wanted $500.00 for it but looking on the internet I think I still got a good deal but your right their not worth much. As far as modding it I was only looking into the idea of doing it as like all guys more power = big smiles (But was really unsure if it would of been worth my while when it was an auto not a manual). But I am really glad that you made mention that the auto tranny is not strong enough to run the car at high boost b/c for the cost of the upgraded spring / waste gate / ECU was looking like it was worth the couple hundred bucks. I was really thinking of doing it. I think my best option with the car it to just fix what is needed and move on to somthing else with a bit more potential.
My friends uncle owns a couple Audi's (91 200 QT / A4 / 88 5000QT /and his pride and joy 83' quattro UR ) and I have been talkling to him about the car quite a bit he told me that if I was interested to talk to him b/c he has a 90 200QT 20V (wagon) 5speed he is willing to trade for it but the 90 has alot more milage (260k) and not even close to the same condition. I keep telling him to trade for his (83' quattro UR) with no luck. I will keep in contact as I may be calling for some parts for the 87 if needed. Thank you yet again for you help
