Recently, I realized the auto focusing adjustment for my headlight is not working. It always point to the ground. It is a 2002 A4 1.8T. There is no broken fuse; could someone tell me what is going on?? Tahnks!

 

Do you mean the auto-level isn't working? You can see if the gears inside the housing have dislodged for some reason but taking the headlight out and removing the back lid. The gears are connected from the auto-level motor to the bottom of the lens. This may have popped out and not actuating the gear to push the bottom of the lens.

 

Suggest starting with a VAG scan as it may point out the fault quickly.

Also try with someone standing in front of car watching both headlights, start with ignition off, turn it on for a few seconds, then off again. Did they see both headlights gimble from level (ign off) to pointing down (ign on, may have to start engine) and back to level again (ign off)?

If not, suggests there is something wrong inside the headlight leveler or the controller and VAG *should* report it.

If so, means leveling motors inside headlights is working correctly but sensor has a problem, like a bent sensor bracket, broken arm, failed sensor, etc. Sensor Leveling system thinks front end is high so it is pointing headlights down. Inspect one front and one rear level sensor attached to suspension control arm, typically driver side.


I just went thru similar issue with a dealer serviced C5 A6, they replaced both engine mounts and horribly bent front leveling sensor bracket causing both front headlights to point down, xenon headlight cutoff line was about 4' in front of bumper and could not see anything on highway at night.

VAG-COM will let you see leveling sensor output voltages. For the case of C5 A6 troubleshooting, leveling sensor output range is 1.6 to 3.5 volts. Rear sensor output read 2.5v (midrange ok) but front measured 3.5v (pegged at top end of range, meaning front end is 10' in the air... NOT). To fix, I re-adjusted (aka un-dealer-bend) front level sensor bracket til VAG output matched the back while parked on level ground and it's all good again.

when i turn on the headlight there is no up and down movement, it always point down for both side.
and there is weird symbol shows on my monitor, it has two arrows point up and down, three slash between the arrows and also a exclamatory mark in a enclosure beside them. so if this is something to do with the gears, how can i fix them without taking in to the deal.
is there any other fuse box located outside the car? i only checked those on the left side of the dash.
