Are different rims width really dangerous for the tranny??

I was thinking of going with 18x8 in front and 18x9.5 in the back. But the saleclerks from tsw told me I shouldn't do that for the sake of the quattro. I've asked my friend who owns an S4 and he told me the same.

I understand that the rims height should match the stock size, but I don't get what the width have to do with anything!!

Can someone enlight me??

This is new to me as well, is it that the widths are different than stock or that the front and treat are different from each other?

You want to maintain the same radius on all tires. Perhaps by stretching the tire onto a wider wheel you will reduce the radius. However, there is a tolerance that is acceptable. I had to replace two tires and was well within the spec allowed, since my tires only had about 8k Km on them and little wear.
You need to confirm this , but I think the drive train would accommodate a difference in tread depth of about 3-4/32.

hummmm alright....

@Stever: the front would be the same width but not the back...but anyway I changed idea and will go with Miro type 279 in 18x9 all around

About tolerance for a strech tire....my setup will be square with 18x9 on all four corners....so far the guy at oemconcept told me to go with 235/40/18 tires but could I go with 225/40/18 with a slight stretch instead???
