Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Did anyone figure out anything else about this noise? I have a 2012 A4, 2.0L turbo and my car makes the same noise. It makes a howling noise that sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car, but only when it's very cold outside. It happens when I let off of the gas or press the clutch in, usually under 50 mph. Lately I have been starting to hear the noise at around 60 mph as well. The noise always goes away once the car warms up. I brought my car into the dealer and of course it was not making the sound once I brought it in.
It's a shame, cause it takes pleasure out of driving in the winter time.... I still plan to bring it to my dealer attention one more time, just didn’t have time to hassle with it yet. I hope I will before this winter is over….

Unfortunately, I haven't found any solution to it. It bothers me all the time. This winter is especially hard on it, as temps are frigid all the time, here in Barrie.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
I noticed the whining you described in November and December when the temperatures here were between 0 to +10 degrees celsius. The noise kept on getting louder and if in the beginning it was audible only when engine braking in the end I was able to hear it all the time when revs were below 2000 rpm on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. I agreed with the dealer that I bring the car to service so they can listen it. The day I was supposed to take the car to service was the fist subzero day and temperature was around -15 degrees celsius. The whining noise was completely gone and I was able to hear it even when I drove the car bit warmer and let it cool again. I cancelled the service and we agreed that I would come back when the noise comes back.
It came back maybe three weeks ago when temperature climbed above 0 degrees celsius again. I drove immediately to service and they were able to hear it. The next day they had the car for a whole day and they told me they used some sort of a noise recording device attached to the gear box to locate the noise. When I came to pick-up the car they said that they need to replace the cardan shaft of the gearbox. To be honest I don't know what they mean with gearbox cardan shaft because to my understanding DSG only has the input shafts.
Well anyways, I have a time to service on coming Tuesday when they should do the replacement. I will ask more details about what they will change and report to you if the whining goes away. I talked to the mechanic earlier and he said that there has been some reports about the whining noise in cold weather and that they have changed the shafts as a cure so I hope they know what they're doing and they're not only guessing.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
So I have taken my Q5 for testing today. Forecast was calling for -20C at night, so I left car on dealer’s parking lot overnight. Got to it in the morning, started test drive with tech and freaking thing wasn’t doing it as much as I have expected…. Tech heard it though, a bit. He said he’ll do research in Audi database and let me know about findings.
It’s a frustrating thing: only comes on winter time when temps are below 0C, does it 80% of the time when I take my foot of acceleration, sometimes does it more and sometimes less (which was my case today). Whatever it is – it’s related to outside air temp, as it does it even when car engine gets wormed up. I hope he will find some trace of similar issues being reported, I’ll keep you posted.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
I got my car back from the service and it seems that the noise is gone. Temperatures here have been between 0 and +5 degrees celsius and I haven't heard the noise at all.
They didn't touch the gearbox but the changed the cardan shaft after the gearbox. According to them the problem is in the shaft bearing but the bearing can't be replaced alone so the whole shaft has to be replaced.
Seems to be working but I'll keep you updated if the whining noise returns.

I'm wondering if it's specific to certain type of transmissions. Is yours 8 speed from ZF?

Ok, now I thinking about, transmission type shouldn't make a difference, since it's after the gearbox.
I'll press my dealer to focus on this.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
After test-driving and speaking with dealership, they called Audi Canada and said Audi wants them to try to adjust drive shaft first. So they tried - but it didn't make a difference. Next step is to replace it. They got Audi authorization and located shaft somewhere in Texas. I got phone call that it's here, and have service scheduled for Thursday. I'm really hoping this will fix annoying noise. I'll let you know.
