Hi all!

I too am of the opinion that if stopped (by the police) first be polite, forthcoming and even accomodating, make sure that your papers are OK and that you do not "look guilty". I am not a huge lover of the police force in Ontario, but we have to live with them...

Incidentally: licence plates are the property of the Province, and are just "given" to motorists to use; the law states that modifying a licence plate in any way is "defacing Crown property" and as such the Highway Traffic Act has provisions for this... thus the cops who give motorists a hard time when they EVEN/MERELY use tinted plate covers!

I drive a 2002 A4 Q. 1.8T and is lowered and has some mods for power (250HP to the wheels they tell me), but it has stock exhaust, and other than a discrete spoiler on top of the trailing edge of the trunk-lid, it looks stock and I have never had problems...yet!

"Bottom line" when stopped by the cops be nice!

After doing a bit of research, that is exactly what I found out. The license plate is government property and it's illegal to modify it in any way (just like money). I consider myself lucky that the cop didn't make a big deal out of it because it's straight to court, not just a simple fine. I headed out to the MTO right away and was "given" another set.... for 20 bucks!!!!!

First of all I love the red on RS4 reps with the BFG tires. Really nice combo!

Secondly cops are all a pain in the *** here in Ontario. They will gladly pull you over and waste you time complaining about your plate being defaced, or not visible or whatever. Why do they do this when they could be out stopping drunk driver's and reckless drivers. I recently got a no front plate ticket in my Dad's corvette and as we were pulled over at least 3 motorbikes and 4 cars flew by us doing way over the speed limit. Instead the stupid *** cop is wasting his time giving me the ticket, because you know how unsafe not showing a front plate is!

I've never heard of people changing the look of their cars, causing deaths but I've heard over and over people driving stupidly causing death. Not all accidents are in modified cars and the police need to realize this. Unfortunately for them it's just a matter of filling their quota each month and taking the easiest way to do it instead of stopping the more dangerous. Great job guys have another donut on the taxpayer's money.

While I appreciate the hate for the cops: I mean who does not hate authority; In Ontario and Toronto in particular, they have a hard job!

Now, being, for the most part, a bunch of egomaniacs with a love for guns, the blame for the state of decay and the application of laws, not just the Highway Traffic Act, but Civil, Criminal, Family, Young Offenders is to be taken almost as a whole by the politicians WE are electing.
They are the ones who are happy to take our tax-money, and let the police give us such a low return/service on our dollar... Maybe it is us who must vote better!

...my two pennies' worth!

Thanks, I'm happy with it. I live in a town of 6000 people. The problem is here, you'll see the same cop day after day so if you give one a hard time, he'll tell his little buddies and you'll have the whole bunch on your ***, constantly, every day. This is why you have to nod at the right places and play the game, or else you can never leave the driveway without being harassed (a lot of rookies trying to build a reputation end up here, too bad for us). Actually I get into a lot more trouble with my summer toys here than my car (straight pipes, helmets, etc...).

Those are some nice bikes. I totally understand about playing the game though in little towns.

well back to the origional question about ny and "modified Audis" and the polics, i think it all depends on wherer you are from. i live in upstate ny (Albany/ Schenectady area). i drive an 01 A4 1.8, black with 80% tint all around minus the windshield, and a borla exhaust that isn't that loud, more sporty than ...well "honda ricer...e" ahhahah. but as for police i dont have a problem so much around my home town with my tints or exhaust. however i went to SUNY Potsdam (way north by the boarder, kinda small town setting) last year and had nothing but problems with the local cops on the drive up and even in the town of Potsdam. I was allways getting pulled over for tints and once recently for exhaust and the trooper wrote me 3 tickets, one for exhaust, tints....and another one i wont mention. i have been ticketed for tints 4 of 5 times each like $60-*80, but i just pay the fine and keep them on. but it all depends on where you are. personaly my experience has been, the smaller the town, the bigger ***** the cops are. most of it has to do with a kid driving a nice car that looks good. but i hope this helped you out at least a little!

I haven't had any problems so far but then again I look pretty stock except for wheels/exhaust tips. I think they're more worried about the stereotypical ricers than they are about the Audi tuning crowd.

I'm still waiting to get pulled over for my "illegal" license plate cover.
