Default 2001 Allroad - airbag control module (error 65535)

VAG-COM says 65535: Internal Control Module Memory Error 00-10 Intermittent.

$801 from the local dealer - yikes!

I have another local independent who would look for a better price for me, but from all accounts I'm best off getting one with the EXACT same part number (or else I might have to replace-recode various other bits & pieces too, supposedly).

I saw someone's write-up of how to get at the airbag control module in a 2001 A6 sedan that involved dismantling a bunch of stuff, starting from the rear central air vent and working forwards to include removal of the stereo. Is that the same method for an Allroad?

I was hoping to more easily get to it so as to find the part #, so as to set my parts guy to searching. Am I out of luck? Any other suggestions?

According to one other link (Ross-tech) it COULD be faulty wiring to/from the airbag control module, but again, access could be difficult...?

Thanks for any & all comments/suggestions, including another place to get a new airbag control module...!

Well i suppose that it could be a result of fault wiring or mismatch from airbag control module .
Well this problem is not so big, u my negotiate with the local dealer for less price.

Actually, 65535 is repairable in quite a few cases. How do I know?

Because I do it all the time.

Vag-Com will not clear this type of fault and as for the defective wiring, no!

This is an internal controller fault set by:
1. The customer or owner (boosting is so dangerous)
2. Defective internal eeprom data within the CR16 MCU

Thanks for that - wish I had found you earlier!

I had tried using Airbag Systems (I think) in Texas - they had a price of $125 + shipping to repair & send back. The new unit worked initially, but then failed again shortly after. The fellow offered to try repairing it again, but said that Audi airbag modules are troublesome. He did refund my money (but not shipping), and also dropped his price to $75, and started offering to just SELL units outright, but didn't have my exact one in stock.

I ended up finding a used module from a wrecker on the U.S. east Coast, I think, for $250, and it has stayed working now for several months (knock on wood)!

Will look for your info if it happens again - thanks!

Does that mean you still have the old controller? If so, I'd like a kick at it.

That is the best info I've seen in a while!

A buddy has an '01 A4 2.8L airbag controller with 65535 that he recently replaced. There was no vehicle crash and no bag deployment. He still has the old one. How much to fix?

Isn't that just the eeprom chip overheating? It doesn't throw the code on a cold day but on hot days it does?

I have never heard that. If that fault is set, it's there forever. As for temperature affecting an airbag controller, you would think the suppliers would have recalled them. In my opinion, misinformation.

Eeprom in those controllers, no. The memory is in the CR16 or Motorola MCU.

My mistake ECM. I think it was Error 18161 I was thinking about. It's a tiptronic sensor issue in the shifter.
