Default Vag Com for New Vehicle?

Picking up a 2011 S4 this week. Just curious, is there much point in buying a VagCom cable (think it's around $300?) for a new vehicle under warranty? I.e., if there are any problem codes, I'll likely have the stuff fixed by the dealer.

So I'm wondering if there is any benefit to having a Vag Com until later on. One thing I would LOVE to do is use the software to adjust my S4 so that I can actually see what gear the car is in when not using the Tiptronic, which for some reason Audi turned off on these models but can in fact be turned back on via VagCom.

Though I guess that's not worth potentially voiding the warranty for!

Newb to the Audi and VagCom, so if something above was just plain stupid, I get a few free passes right?

I don't know if I'd buy it just for that. I'm sure you could find someone on the forum locally that would help you with that for a 6 pack or something.

Also, enabling that won't void your warranty.

+1 it will not void your warranty, however new firmware comes out for the cars and the dealer installs it which resets you back to factory so you might have to do it once or twice, depending if they have new firmware or not.

Thanks guys, not sure why Audi went and removed the gear identifier when in Auto mode. I guess they figured the end user won't care. But I like knowing what gear my car is in, though it doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Will have to look up how to upgrade the vehicle as well (i.e., whether it's something I download and upgrade via USB or at the Audi Service Center only?).

Audi does it for you automatically so you do not do anything at all. It is rare but they might have to reflash your drive sometimes when they install new things etc. dont even worry about it

i would second that. there is vag-com thread on the forum that you can see where people are locally to you and PM them and meet up to have it done for a few buck or some of these guys for small case of beer. cheaper than $300+ for cable.

yeah, just bring that B8 by my house in Oakville and I'll vagcom whatever you need.

I'm not sure if I'd buy a $300 ross-tech cable for the basics. Always plenty of helpful forum members around. They're easily plied with gifts

Thanks, may take you up on that offer. Jut let me know if you're into eer, wine, or heck, I can calibrate your TV if you're into that! Would just need to let me know the model number well in advance if it isn't a Samsung or Sony which I'm most familiar with! I'm a bit of an audio/video freak..
