Default Help with a new used vehicle purchase!

hey guys, im new to the audi world. I used to own an impala ss until i wrote it off last month . Anyways, I'm looking at a 2002 audi a4 1.8t quattro 5 speed with 200,000 kms. this vehicle has all service records, but the timing belt was last done 50k ago. If i do buy it i will be buying it for 3500 safetied and e tested. Is this worth my time or will I end up with a car that is a total money pit. Basically is this car a reliable car with the engine and tranny it has in it?

Thanks,
Cameron

any more details on the car? specs and all? photos?

its very hard to give an opinion off of year, model, and km only.

Plus $3500 does not seem possible.... sounds like a scam.

Even at 200,000km you should be paying $6-7,000 if not more depending on packages and specs

the only reason its so cheap is because my dad is a used car manager at the dealership i work at, and i told him i really wanted that car so he lowballed the guy and got it for 3500 on trade. I can get pics when i go to work later today lol. I forgot to mention that the engine light is on, but when i drove it, it seemed perfectly fine (not to say that there isnt anything wrong, but it probably isnt anything major, i hope) I love the looks of this car, i really hope that it will turn out to be good mechanically

Is there anything visual that I could inspect that would show signs of wear, ie timing belt.

well before you buy any used car you should bring it to a mechanic to have it inspected. Most used car dealerships will let you do this.

Take it to a audi/vw independant mechanic and they will charge you about $80 to look at it. They will let you know if they think its in good shape and any issues they see with it.

never buy a used car without doing this. If the dealer wont let you, then pass on the car.

I agree take it to a mechanic and have it also scanned and get an idea what codes that engine light is throwing at it.

ok, I can have it looked at at my dealership for free, so ill do that and ill post the codes it throws and maybe its just an easy fix. and A4rob, if you are saying that these cars are worth 7-8 grand even with the k it has, then i might just buy it no matter what and flip it and make some cash!

I was just on auto trader and found 4 different ones (04,04,04,03) with 200,000+km and they were in the $8-9k range.

They may not ever sell for that much but they are listed at that.
