Update map for MMI
I just bought a 2009 Audi Q7 and notice that the GPS map is outdated.
How to I go about updating to the latetest roads for Canada?
Do I have to go to an Audi dealer? If so does anyone have an idea what it would cost?

Last fall, my dealer had a $200 special for updating the maps. I took advantage of it for my Q5 and the disk was labelled 2011-2012. The maps, however, were much older than advertised. A number of road upgrades were missing for familiar routes in the US and I estimate the maps were really current only to 2010. Overall a disappointing result for an expensive option (and please don't get me re-started on the lack of US traffic information ...).

Dealer cost of the disc is over $200, so I would avoid these "specials" as they are likely to unload old material. Probably what happened there.
The discs for older models used to be supplied by Navteq.com and used to cost $400, but have since been replaced by Audi Genuine Product. If you frequent Downtown Toronto, PM me and I can place the order for you at my shop. Takes two days for delivery. $272+HST for your truck.
Cheers,
Paul

I guess I'm some what disappointed by the NAV in my Audi Q7. This is my first Audi and it never cross my mind the NAV system wouldn't be as good (or even better) then a cheap $100 TOM TOM one I can buy just about anywhere I go.
For one I assumed that it would be touch screen.

I suppose if you're comparing a Tom Tom bought in 2008 compared to your 2009 model year Q7 it would be a fair fight
As for the touchscreen, did you notice very few of the high end manufacturers use it? There are reasons why they don't. Key thing is, it becomes a safety issue leaning forward and taking your concentration away from the road. See how when you rest your elbow on the armrest your hand falls directly on the MMI controls? Try programming your windshield mounted Tom Tom while you're on the 410 at over 100 kms/hr.
With the design of the MMI, it should take you only a couple of weeks looking down to identify the buttons. There's really only 6 buttons you need to memorize. Eventually, it will allow the safe input of information, while driving (although not ideal) and without looking down taking your attention away from the road. Get your map update and you will learn to love the MMI.
Good luck,
Paul

Regardless what I'm comparing it to if I could ask for one thing I would ask for a touch screen.
Programming the MMI while driving at 100 kms/hr (or 120 kms/hr here in Ontario) is not advisable and distracting as well. Every time I start to program the MMI while driving I get the warring (not sure what it says) and have to accept before I can continue.
Not sure yet what I will do but I'm sure I'll get used to the MMI. I very much like everything else about the Q7 and I would not hesitate to buy another one. I'm a long time Volkswagen driver and the upgrade to an Audi has been well worth it. I don't like the quality cuts they have made to the Volkswagens in the recent models.

Just got our Audi but first impressions.
I like the detail and display of this nav system but the lack of a touch screen is a real PITA and the cost of updates is highway robbery. The cross hairs and joystick system is really Mickey Mouse and a pull over to the side or co pilot function only. I have a six year old portable Magellan that all I have to do is touch the icon on the screen and it gives me the info. Touch it again and it takes me there. Simple.
When it comes to programing in motion, all the manufacturer has to do is make some functions inoperative when the vehicle is in motion. The built in system in my truck does this. I can select a POI or favourite when in motion but have to stop if I want to enter a new address. It ain't that complicated.
If it wasn't for the other features that come with the nav system, I would pass on it and might in future.

@wilber
I agree!
I have decided not to spend the $300 + for updates. Instead I will buy myself a Samsung Note (or something similar) and then use the TomTom Andriod app ($60 with life time updates). Then buy some a clip/holder that will plug in to the 12V outlet to hold the Samsung Note.
Should work good.
