A dumb decision : leads to At fault accident record
Over the weekend I had my car parked, and I did not realize that the front bumper had got caught on one of those concrete parking stones.
So when I was backing out, the bumper caught on those stones, was pull out, with the front in place but the sides completely off, and was sticking into the tires.
Since I was way away from home, about and hour and a half on 401 from home, and did not have CAA, I made a dumb decision of calling my insurance company for assistance. Because I did not want to risk driving the car and probably causing more damage to my car and any one on the street.
So a flatbed tow truck took the car into an auto shop in downtown Toronto, even though I wanted them to tow it home.
Now, since I called the Insurance company for assistance, they have to make it into a claim, and it will registered as an at fault claim.
Even more frustrating part is, the repair for this damage is estimated at $ 2200 !!!!..for a new bumper, fog lights and AC line(?), even though my bumper is in perfectly good condition. I have to pay my deductible plus a 50 % betterment fee for this replacement, which comes up to $ 900.
The auto shop said that they can put the bumper and fix the fog lights for 600, which I think is way too expensive, but at this point I have no choice, plus its much cheaper than the insurance route.
Now the Insurance company is saying that they cannot cancel this claim, as it has been already registered. So I have to pay the proper repair charges for the fix.
So before you guys start to crucify me for not paying attention when parking or not having CAA, what options do I have here ?
I would just go into the Auto shop drive my car out and fix the damn bumper myself, if I can sort the mess with the Insurance Company !!!!

Dude, you are done. Not only are you going to have to pay the deductible, your insurance may go up as well. Who is your insurance company?

However, I am publicly crucifying you for asking the insurance what to do and having them send you a tow truck (am I right for the tow truck?). If it's minor (ie: sub ~2k), NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER talk to your insurance company about it (unless someone was injured) because you'll get screwed for it. Same goes for the deductible, try to put it high (~1k) because if it's less than that it's definitely not worth claiming since you'll pay it multiple times with the increased premiums. I doubt there's anything you can do with them because it's considered a claim but here's a little something that may help ease the pain with the insurance co
