For Sale: 98.0 A4 1.8T Wetterauer Chip, or take the whole car!
Selling my 1998 A4 1.8T (quattro, manual, sport) for parts, however I will sell the Wetterauer chip separately if anyone is interested.
The car is currently on the road. It has 366,000 km on it and a number of non-essential things are worn out or not working (AC, central locking, etc.) as well as some other problems that make me think this car would cost too much to "restore" as a daily driver. Due to the cost of Audi parts and the increasing frequency of repairs I have replaced it with another vehicle, but I'm hoping someone out there can make use of it. I bought this car new, I have been the only owner, and it has never been in an accident.
If someone wants the Wett chip, I propose an ECU swap in order to allow me to sell the rest of the car "complete" and running. An ECU swap between cars would take about 15 minutes. The ECU is specific to the 98 A4, and will not work in any other vehicle. I believe there was a 98.5 edition of the ECU that is not compatible, so even if you have a 98 it may not work. This is easy enough to ascertain. If the ECU is compatible, the car will start. If the car doesn't start it isn't compatible, but no damage is done and the original ECU can be put back in.
Chip tuning is quite safe. I have used this chip in my car for over 250,000 km without any problems. Note that when the chip was installed they replaced the chip on the circuit board with a socket, then put the new chip in the socket. I still have the original chip, and it can be put back in the socket at any time to go back to the original ECU program. This is a relatively simple process which involves opening the ECU box and replacing the chip in the socket.
Note: the engine and transmission each have been replaced with used parts, and each have about 120,000 km on them. The engine was replaced because the main bearing suffered damage when a small oil seal cracked and drained all the oil. This happened in rural central Ontario on Christmas 2011, and I was forced to drive the car too far without oil. The transmission, on the other hand, I just wore out.
Prices:
Wetterauer chip ECU swap: $100
or
The whole car (with the chip): $500
or
The whole car (without the chip, if someone has already bought it): $400
If you just want the chip this can be done in my driveway in Scarborough. If you want to buy the car, it's still on the road so I will deliver it anywhere in the GTA.
Please contact me at 416-801-6119 if you are interested.
