Consensus seems to be that the collision repair shop screwed up. I
can't find anything so I'm reduced to taking it to my local wizard. If
both mirrors did it, I wouldn't be quite as worried. But!!!

I had the same problem with my kids car. Noticed that the light wasn't on indicating auto dimming on the rear view mirror and the right hand mirror was a bit smokey/amber colored. I think what happened is that she spilled coffee on the rear defroster switch and the mirrors were heating all the time. I sprayed electrical cleaner on the switch and the mirrors cooled off right away. Short term fix as the switch should probably be pulled and thoroughly cleaned or replaced.
