Thanks for your response.
I appreciate that the water pump is driven from the same belt, but is
it common for a waterpump failure to wreck an A4 engine?
Or perhaps there is a more general issue with A4 timing belt failures
as outlined by the US class action?

If its driven by the T-belt then a WP failure would cause havoc. At 70K
miles you'd be advised to think about a T-Belt (and tensioner change) and to
change the WP and thermostat while you were in there.
I know the VAG service interval is 100K+ miles but prevention is much
cheaper than cure if it fails.

There were only a few years where the engine design was such that a failed
WP would cause a TB failure, so in the grand scheme of things, it's probably
not very common. But it's not impossible either.
Usually, the most common reason for TB failure is a prematurely (if you look
at Audi's replacement recommendations) broken TB tensioner. But whatever
the cause (broken tensioner or seized WP), the result is generally the same:
bent valves on the engine.
Those who are "in the know" replace the TB, tensioner, rollers, and WP every
60K miles, just to be safe.
Cheers,
Pete
