Default ? 2000 A6 2.7 alternator removal...?

....how hard coud be?I got to point of loosening 2 of the bolts from alternator (is there 3rd one?).Now im stuck.Im working underneath the car.I havent loosen tensioner (no access).Am i doing right , or it shoud be done from the front of the car? What are the costs of this type of work?....The reason im trying to remove it is that im not getting charge to battery (red light, also i cheked by removing battery ground wire and engine died so its alternator). Thx in advance for all replys.

I know this is an old post but it popped up the second link when i googled a6 alternator removal, just thought i would throw in my 2 cents on testing the alternator.
It is a very bad idea to pull the negative cable with the car running as you mentioned. If the alternator had been charging it is possible for the voltage to spike upwards of 30volts. The alternator needs to be connected to a battery to "sink" that voltage and if the field is energized and it looses that load... bad things can happen to computers. Im fairly new to audis but i have replaced the EGU and BCM in a toyota pickup because somebody did this.

Wow, you managed to get the alternator out of the car without pulling the front bumper? I'd like to see pics of that!

I would say that it is possible, but difficult to change the alternator with the bumper on.

The easier method would be to
1-remove front bumper
2-remove torx screws holding in rad support
3-remove bumper shocks
4-allow rad support to come forward as far as upper and lower rad hose allow.
5-remove two bolts holding alternator, one is 13mm, the other is 6mm allen
6-throw a wrench on the access tensioner and remove acc belt
7-tap the alternator out from the top/center of the motor
8-install is reverse of removal
