I had this stuff on our silver GTI. Not really sure what is was... I think maybe tar that got on the paint and then washed off... But left some orange stuff looking like rust. Used claybar and it came out with elbow grease. I would be careful using polish. Polish may lift it but if you keep polishing with the lifted "dirt" you will scratch your paint. At least with claybar, you will lift it and it will embed in the clay and there is less chance of scratching... Just use elbow grease!

 

It isn't rust FYI, thats why you will see it on all parts of the car plastic or metal..It is industrial fallout, which is in the air and will adhere to your paint, like people have mentioned it is just more noticeable on a white car but it affect all....I find the easiest way to remove it is elbow grease with one of those mesh bug sponges that you use on your bumper, haven't tried the clay bar so I can't speak of its effectiveness...

 

Sakimano is on the right track! Metallic particles that embed themselves in the surface coat of your paint…a nice long winter with lots of exposure to road salt is all you need to get these little guys rusting. It will not damage the body as the rusting is in the surface coat however it can be very unsightly. I lived on the West Coast most of my life and had no problems…very little salt on the roads in Victoria! I first noticed it when I relocated to Ottawa…I shipped two cars via rail and both vehicles produced a tremendous amount of surface contamination the following summer which I later learned was from iron particles coming off the rails and rail braking system during shipment. To a lesser degree this is what happens with your car during daily driving. The solution for me was Mother’s clay!...and some elbow grease!!

OK before the winter I had the car polished and waxed. The rust spots were almost (99%)gone.

I had one step polish done on my car. Apparently you need the three step polish to remove the swirls and contamination. But mine is a 2008, I don't have a lot of swirls.

By spring, I will repolish and wax the car. i will be doing this twice a year, before and after winter.
