If you are serious about using VCDS buy from the original source, Ross Tech http://www.ross-tech.com.
They have a link to distributors on their website - this cable is expensive and saves you money the first time you use it. You can buy knockoffs from other vendors but won't get much support. With the full cable, Ross-Tech is always willing to help with any issues that may arise. My 2c worth - I have the Ross Tech cable and am extremely satisfied with it.

Working with Windows 7 for me as well - Ross-Tech updated drivers to support 64 bit OS as well. That's what I mean by going with the full VCDS cable. Ross-Tech makes things works, other companies not so much...
