I was looking under the car and the exhaust is starting to get real rusty down where it splits into 2 (resonator?).

How hot does it get at that point, could I safely apply some rust oil to it, or will it just smoke off cause its too hot? I feel like if I do nothing, there will be holes in it after the winter...
