maxaudi- 650km in city even in a CVT equipped A4 is hard to believe for me.... Yesterday and today I was driving as slow as I could and I got 115km out of a quater tanks which ends up being 460 in a full tank (90% city driving)

Pablo-I totally agree, but I wished a little more gas mileage out of a four cylinder... but I guess that's the price I'm going to have to pay for owning a "German engineered" xD

 

I wanna see a4 1.8t quattro with 700km on one tank in winter time city or mix driving
Even FSI engines cant do it.
My 2006.5 TDI VW Jetta in winter time can squeeze one tank up to 750-800km, one more time DIESEL in mix driving.

 

i found out the trick for the CVT models!!! CVT's come equipped with a 70L tank instead of the 63L in this quattro!! But that's still 2.8km/litre better than the Quattro!

I drive an 2004 Audi A4 with the CVT tranny, in the summer no matter how hard i drove it i still got atleast 800km to the tank(70l). now in the winter i have my Dunlop Winter Sport M3 tires on which have a huge profile, people call mine tractor tires and i still get 650km easy.

my personal best was on 93octane on way to alberta- crusing @120kmh = 975km on the tank, thats what my tripometer read when i filled it back up when low gas light went on. other than that normal summer driving gets me 850-900km on tank every time.

point is no its not unbelievable that we CVT drivers get way better milage, i do 50/50 city/hwy driving and mostly 110km/h. I am 21 years old too so that should explain some things. and my car has 200,000km on it already and still goin strong!

You CAN do something about the mass. Take as much out of your car as possible so that you have less MASS but you still retain the volume which will affect drag. Volume is the constant in this equation not the mass.


Air density also affects performance. Example. On a cold day air is thicker which makes it harder for your car to "push" through it but the trade off is more air per unit volume gets into your engine.

On warm days the air is less dense so it's the opposite.... Easier to "push" through but less air per unit volume gets into the engine.

Here's a question for all you physics aficionados.

Suppose it's -35 degrees celcius out there and you're doing 150 on a highway. Due to the air being so thick and the friction generated while moving through thicker air, would the leading edge of the car (front of the front bumper) be slightly warmer than the trailing edge of the car (back of the rear bumper)?

Yes it would. There is more pressure at the front. Compressed air becomes warmer, like in your bicycle pump.

 

My formula describes how many Kilojules or calories you will burn in gas to get it to certain speed.

Energy Kj = (1500 kg X Speed Square)/2

So if you use shell gas you get more energy from it, than from the gas with alcohol added, because there is more heat in it.

 

My 2 cents! Ignoring the physics, my 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro gives me 700 highway and 500 city on 94 octane Sunoco Gold.
