I use 12A and do it myself. 134a does not work well.

 

R-134a is a high pressure refrigerant where R-12 is a low pressure one. The two can't be mixed or interchanged. When converting from R-12 to R134a it usually involves some mechanical changes such as compressors and valves.

This is something you should really have a licenced Auto A/C mechanic check. Remember that the A/C system is a closed loop system. If you are low on refrigerant it is because you have a leak. The leak needs to be fixed first before anything else.
