this is an update to my post "tranny trouble". turns out my transmission computer was sitting in 3 inches of water and is now fried. the guys at a local tranny shop have it out and want $800 for a used part and another $300 to put it in. i can get the part cheaper if i order it through a used parts distributor so i'd rather do it myself. has anyone had any experience installing these? is it as easy as plugging in a few wiring harnesses and putting the passenger seat back overtop of it?

 

It's just that easy. Try not to break the tabs off the connectors when removing them from the computer. Also, be sure you have the right part. Take yours for reference. When reinstalling, be careful not to crimp any wires and bolt the computer securely back into place.

Whatever they charge for the part is their decision. The install labour is billed out using a program. The reason it is so much is because, as you said, the passenger seat needs to be removed.

did you figure out where the water was coming in from?

 

i have the carpet pulled up on the passenger side and i can't see an obvious spot where it has been coming in. if you press on the floor boards there will be less resistance inareas where holes in the floor are plugged with rubber stoppers but these all seem to be intact.

the truth is this car has been nothing but trouble for me. i'm pretty sure that the mechanic i bought the car from was pure evil! having said that, i'm fixing it and bringing it in to a local dealership for trade-in. if i find out where the leak is i'll be sure to post but i'm not overly concerned with finding it.

 

thankx to you i found my problem to my car it turns out my transmission computer was under water as well it was swimming in water and i found out where the water was coming in from thru my cabin filter the plastic that protects my filter was crack and had a big hole so now i took it to a shop that a friend owns i told him what your car symptons where and he was like thats the same as your car. that has to be your problem we look under the floor mat and it was soaking wet we just order the computer for 200$ used thank you

 

hey gang. Im new to this whole Audi Thing. I recently bought a '98 Audi A6 Quattro from a private seller, a few months back. He has told me the tranny computer needs to be replaced. I've looked online and found a guy selling a used one for like $400 bucks. It matches mine exactly. Now the problem is installing. From reading the earlier posts it doesn't sound terrible complicated but would like a bit of detailed information on how to take the passenger seat out. Is it hard? Is installing the transmission computer hard? i hope someone recieves this message.
