Continental Extreme Winter Contacts are excellent. I used a 205/55/16 fitting on my A3.
My previous car was a AWD Subie and I used Toyo's GO2 with that. On the A3 I have (no quattro) with the Conti's I would say are just as good in comparision and I feel just as safe in the A3. For the Continential's I downsided from the stock 17in tire to 16in. I posted a pic in the A# Steel wheels thread.
