Looking at a 2000 S4
Hey folks,
I'm considering a 2000 S4, triptronic with 143k on it.
Dealer is asking $10,995.
I'm pretty sure i'd prefer a 6speed... but to those of you who have driven both, is the triptronic at least enjoyable?
Is it a solid automatic, or a real slushbox? All the test drives i've found are naturally the 6pd variants.
First glance, what do you think of the price? The car looks mint. Not sure about accidents, waiting for a response.
Thanks!

The price sounds reasonable as a certified vehicle from a dealer. I had the 6MT version of the car so I am not in a position to comment on the automatic. I know if it were the manual tranny it might have gone for more. Keep us posted on the purchase and progress?

One year is kind of unusual from used car lot, particularly a high end twin turbo car like the S4. Get in writing exactly what that means. Like I said the price does seem reasonable with the somewhat low mileage that is on the car. You see them still at that value and higher with more miles.

Hrm, i'll at least have to go give it a test drive. See how it feels.
I read reference to 'a speedboat on a light chop' on a bumpy road, from a road test!

Wow...if you have never driven a B5 S4 you are in for a treat. Stock its a rocket and tuned its speechless. It is one of the desired cars among tuners because of tunablilty and capabilities. IT is not uncommon to achieve 5-600 hp. But thats another conversation.
Go take it for a drive and give us a synopsis of your experience.

Common issues is valve cover gaskets leaking, turbo's leaking, tie rod end's. wheel bearings. check if the timing belt has been done already. check vacuum lines to make sure there not broken and what not, bypass valves also fail, due to cheap plastic design. But are awesome vehicles when in good working order.

Re: Looking at a 2000 S4
Hmm, well if the tiptronic in the 2000 S4 is ANYTHING like the tiptronic in the 2003 Jetta, it'll be nice. My brother had a 2003 Jetta 1.8T, and the Tiptronic was very good, the up and downshifts were always quick, but the smoothest. And of course, having some control over the shifts in an automatic is always nice.
