Default Tailights - confused

When my brake light bulb got burned, I opened the taillight to replace it and then - a surprise: found another bulb missing (the top one). So, what is it for? It's not the parking light bulb, not brake,.......

Right side, but shouldn't there be the one on the left as well?

The only thing that i can think of is that it's the rear fog light. Mine only lights up on the left side, and that's the way it should be I think. I'll take a look in my car.

AudiWorld Tech Articles

Some of the earlier North American A4's only had a rear foglight on the driver's side. Link above shows how to mod for the 2nd foglight.

My B7 Avant came with rear foglights on both sides. My old B5 had just the driver's side rear foglight and it looks like our B6 3.0 has only one as well.

so is that why it appears like there's a burnt bulb on the right side?
