Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
Not sure if Audi uses hub centric rims, but if so, you may need a spacer ring for your aftermarket wheels to ensure the rim is perfectly seated in the centre of the hub. That would explain the shimmy at high speeds. If this turns out to be the issue, you will want to order and have the spacers installed asap.

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
Last night I drove in 2 feet high snowbank next to my wife's office because there was no parking.. I got out of it no problem too, the Q5 is a beast.
Snow got clumped in my wheel and when I hit the highway shortly after, the car was shaking for a while until the snow got knocked loose from all the slush.
That could be your problem.

1. ensure the wheels are proper bore diameter (66.6mm I think on B8 models like our Q5)
2. ensure the wheels/tires are properly balanced
3. if it happens one day, but not the next, it could just be ice and snow stuck on the wheel throwing it out of balance.
If I were a betting man, I'd put $20 on your bore diameter being 57.1 which is the B5/6/7 A4/S4/RS4 + a bunch of other Audis bore diameter, and the most popular one used on aftermarket Audi wheels. The Q5 is like the B8 A4/S4/A5/S5/RS5....needs the bigger bore.

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
I recently had the same issue with my Audi that I would get with an old subaru: Ice buildup on the inside of the rims causing the wheels to be out of balance. Usually happens after a storm - the force of the wheel spinning keeps the ice on the inside of the wheel in place, imabalances the wheel and cause moderate to severe chatter at speed.
Just an idea, but check your wheels and knock away any ice buildup on the inside of your rims with a scraper.

better to get a car wash with underspray to remove any ice. I would want to chip away at anything underneath. I certainly had that problem more than once over the years. Car wssh firemoved all ice build up and freed up suspension and steering after a long, deep freeze. You also didn't mention if wheels are in good shape, hub centric for your car, or did you get steel winter rims?

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
Wondering if anyone else has similar issues with their winter tires and could comment or advise?
I have 235/60R18 XL Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow on my 2010 Q5 and notice that i get vibrations at speeds over 135km. By 150km+ my whole vehicle is shaking.
As far as I can tell the speed rating on these tires is between 170-190km (R to T depending on info).
I know next to nothing about tires, speed rating, etc... other then personal experience and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what this is (ie simply the tire saying thats too fast, a balancing issue etc...).
2 notes:
1) No vibration before 135km
2) this is not my normal driving pattern, was passing and noticed this and then tested again once and then resumed normal driving
Any thoughts (other then dont drive so fast as I explained in point 2) welcome as just want to ensure that all is well.
I have a service in 2000km so will also ask Audi then (who installed the tires purchased from Tire Rack)

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
First thanks to all.
Had my normal service and had Audi do a road test and they noticed the vibration as well. They rotated and balanced the wheels as well as put on some magnets it seemed. Have not had a chance to really test it out myself yet since but will update once I have had it out.

Re: Vibrations at Higher Speeds with Winter Tires on
I put on over 1000 km on the weekend, mostly high speed highway driving, and had no vibrations whatsoever. This was a brand new set of Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2 235/65-17 tires from the Tire Rack, and they arrived perfectly balanced. These tires are also incredibly quiet, with no discernable road noise whatsoever. Highly recommended.
