Trailer hitch control unit issue
Hello All,
Just joined and therefore very new at this. I am really hoping someone can help me out with this issue I am having. I bought my 2007 Q7 a few months ago and wanted to make sure it was equipped with a trailer hitch....unfortunately I did not ask too many questions regarding it. I few weeks ago I bought a 12' box trailer pop up. When I went to plug it in everything works but the brake lights don't light up when I press on the brakes. Also I get an error message in my car telling me that 'Trailer light rear left is not working, or better it has a symbol of a light bulb with an X on it.....but all the lights seem to be working. LONG story short Audi dealership told me I have a malfunctioning trailer hitch control unit and needs to be replaced ($824 plus taxes!!) Can I buy the part myself and plug it in or does it have to be done by the dealership? Is it just a plug and play or that it need to be programmed to the car's computer like everything else it seems? Please help!!
Thanks a lot.
Andrea

Re: Trailer hitch control unit issue
I know ECS tuning sells the control unit, but I am not sure about the programming. Try asking on audizine.com or audiworld.com

Good luck!

Re: Trailer hitch control unit issue
Hung up over an hour of waiting. Spoke to them by phone this morning and yes it does need to be coded....of course it does!!! Going to ask the dealership if I can supply unit and they install....audi wants $707 plus taxes just for the unit. We will see. Thanks again.

Re: Trailer hitch control unit issue
You should research if this something that can be coded with VCDS(or similar software) and a VAG COM cable.
It would be worth investing in a software/cable for the future as well, you can scan for trouble codes, clear codes and other small stuff as well. I have one and it saved me a ton of repair costs on our old 2004 Audi A6.
VCDS is the most comprehensive software, but there might be others that do the same...look into it.
