Trailer hitch adapter 7 to 4 pins
Good morning everyone,
Been a while since my last post but been enjoying the car for 10 months now (2011 Q5).
I had the OEM trailer kit installed when I took delivery of my car last January and only last weekend I got the opportunity to use it to help my neighbour to move his small boat to his father’s place for the winter.
He totalled his van few weeks back where his hitch was on and has not taken delivery of the new one yet.
Trying to help a good neighbour, I offered him to bring his boat to his father’s place only 3 kms away.
We hook the trailer to the Q5 and when we got to connect the brake lights, we realized that the Q5 has the 7-pins round connecter (brakes and lights) but his trailer has no brakes and only the flat 4 pin connector.
I looked around in my trunk and in the box the dealer gave me for the drawbar and the ball to find an adapter but to no success.
I look at the Canadian tire web site and found a REESE adapter (#40-6815-0) which is the 7 pin to 6-pin and 4 pin adapter for $22.99.
Here’s the link :

Does anyone have experience with this or who’s if I need a specific AUDI part number?
Regards
Marc

Re: Trailer hitch adapter 7 to 4 pins
I have both a 5-pin and a 4-pin adapter for my Q5, the former supplied by the dealer with the trailer hitch kit. The 4-pin is from Canadian Tire and both work fine with a standard 4-pin flat connector. The 5th pin is for backup lights.

So the 2 adapters were supplied with the kit?
Thanks,
I will check with the dealer

Re: Trailer hitch adapter 7 to 4 pins
Marc,
I specified a North American adapter at the time of sale. My dealer supplied the 5-pin and I picked up the 4-pin at Canadian Tire. Either works fine but I did not want to leave the 5th pin exposed to the elements.
Note that when a trailer is attached, the blind spot detectors are inactivated.
