I have seen some older threads on the volume of the telephone ring tone. Is it still true that the only way to effectively control the volume of the obnoxious ring tone is to turn it down on the thumbwheel at the end of every telephone conversation, and then turn up the voice volume again at the beginning of every call?

 

The phone volume can be independently controlled - of course if you're listening to music and max volume, the phone volume will ring in proportion to the master volume so you just have to play around to find the perfect balance. Go to the volume section of the MMI (refer to your manual) I can't remember off the top of my head and do the adjustments. Also note that the ring type can be changed.
