Default Navigation Package or No Nav?

Having test drove all the SUV's I was interested in, I am almost ready to commit to the Q5. It's just a matter of when. (I am patient with the long wait and delivery time frame).

The final decision that I have to make now is...

I am currently having trouble deciding whether to go with the Navi package or not. I have been able to live without the convenience of having Navi in any of my vehicles thus far. And I have GPS toys around me (with a Garmin and Navigon on my Iphone 3GS), so it's not a big deal for me. I may use my GPS once a month if I am lucky (but may use it more if it's readily available with a push of a button inside the car??).

The option that I want the most in this package is the backup camera. The only thing is that I can't really justify paying $3500 more to get this option. (Every penny counts sometimes)...

What are the current Q5 owner's POV on the Navi package? Is it worth the upgrade? Is there something else in this package that surprised you (good and bad)? Or since I have lived without the convenience of this technology so far, should I continue to not miss it for a few more years?

The 2010 Nav is worth it IMO. The 3D mode is pretty cool, as well as all the voice commands that you can use. The added benefit that you can watch movies isn't bad either.
You MUST order B&O as well. It is worth every penny!

Agree with afretes 100%. The B&O is a must. I listened for quite some time to both the stock and the B&O system and for the money it is a very well thought out system.

As for the NAVI, that's a personal preference issue. To me, I would not purchase any vehicle new or used (Unless it was a classic car) that did not come with a Nav or where one could not be permanently installed in dash as I do use them on a daily basis. Having said this, think of resale as well. Right now Nav's are an option in many vehicles. In 5+ years who knows where the market will be and whether they will be options or more standard feature (think CD players from the 90's or power windows from the early 90's, now standard fare in many vehicles). One thing is relatively almost certain and that is the cost of Nav's coming down which should lend to increased implimentation. I know if I was buying a used Q5 in 5 years from now I wouldn't even consider one without a built in Nav.

I do like the portable Nav's but built in is still my preference. I prefer to have the dash/ window area free of obstructions if at all possible, but that's my personal preference.

My 2 cents (I own MY2010 without Nav)...

Since you are saying that "I may use my GPS once a month" I would say you absolutely do not need it. I had the same questions. $3,500 for once a month - does not sound right. Even if there are a few more bells and whistles coming with it.

Another thought (coming actually from an Audi Sales Associate). The Nav you put in your car today might be obsolete in a few years. If you wanted to sell your car it might be an issue (again, just thought).

I rather use a portable GPS for the few times we need the Nav.

I see your point flogsta, but is the Audi NAV not upgradable as new maps come out? My 04 Acura had a Nav and I updated it twice in the period I owned it. Was as easy as loading a new disc. I'm hoping the Audi Built in Nav is as user friendly on the voice commands as the Acura was. Fantastic piece of tech that worked very well and all controlled from the safety of the steering wheel.

My 09 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie on the other hand has a more sophisticated NAV when compared to the 04 Acura but the voice recognition has trouble discerning my tone and inflection over the rumble of the performance exhaust. Something I would classify as a design flaw as the car is 100% stock. Here's hoping the Audi Nav is as intuitive as the Acura.

Respectfully, I disagree with most replies here.

Consider it this way - you're not paying $3,500 for the fundamental use of a navigation map. If you're someone who appreciates technology and would utilize the additional features like 2 SD card slots, 10GB hard-drive for your own music, etc. The feature is well worth it. Not to mention the MUCH nicer finish the Nav option presents (Aluminum finished MMI control mounted near the shifter - opposed to plastic centre mount on the dash, not nearly as ergonomic) - you would also get the addition of front parking sensors and a rear view camera.

Plus, the overall MMI use with Nav is more responsive from the Nvidia video card and processors uprgrade.

Trust me, you won't regret getting it!

Giving credit where credit is due. I quoted the below and link referenced this reply in another Audi forum for this same question. Author given full credit for his contributions. Still think this is an excellent reply.

Here is the link to the other thread. Yes I "should" have put quotation marks, but I cannot edit the post or I would have.

I just picked up my Q5 this morning. Used the Nav and went visited my friend at Oakville. Loved it! The given directions were way clear and better than TomTom that I have on my other car.

The MMI3 is the latest and greatest Audi Nav system. Lucky Q5 got it first.
