Default French Street Names on Nav

2010 Q5 with Nav.

Has anyone had this issue with thier Nav...

In Ottawa Canada (Not a french city, but arguably bilingual), all of the street names appear in French such as "Promenade du Rochester" instead of something like Rochester Street (translation leaves something to be desired as the nav frequently futz up the Eng to French substitution). Problem is that "Promenade du" takes up all the display space the nav has to show the street name. So it will say in 200 meters turn left and when I look at the nav to get the street name, the info is useless. That's like saying turn left on The street of...

I've been through the MMI myself and with my dealer and there is no way to turn off the french for Ottawa. As soon as I drive to another city... Kingston, Toronto, NewYork, all street names are in English only.

Audi tells me this is a defult of the software by Navteq as they have designated my city as a french city... Capital of Canada??? Aparantly we didn't get the memo that Ottawa was a french only city now...

So Audi tells me it's Navteq, and Navteq tells me it's Audi...

Any insights? Very irritating when trying to find obscure locations in the city. Oh, and I have no interrest in turning this into a bilingulaism debate.

French immersion class?

Contact Navteq directly and ask. Maybe there's a software update. Some of these systems have secret, installer tool access that isn't included with manual. As an example, on my system (aftermarket Kenwood), if I touch and hold certain displays, a whole new screen will eventually pop up with system installer codes, settings, etc., that they never really want customer to see or access as you could totally screw up system. Navteq could help you through that and maybe there's an embedded setting where you could change city code; if not, pray for a software update.

When I used the NAV (MY2011) briefly in Montreal, I noticed that some NAV programmed streets had both the english and french versions. For instance you could ask the NAV to look up "rue St. Catherine's" or (the english equivalent "St. Catherine Street". I vaguely recall getting those super long road names (Promenade du...) so I used the "additional info on" option, as well as selecting the NAV display in the "driver info screen" (that rectangular screen between speedo and tach).
I recall being frustrated with what name to ask the NAV, the french street names or english street names. Sorry this reply doesn't really help solve the issue, but I'm just trying to empathize.

no. my old OEM Nav was not even DVD based, so only had minimal info and schematic drawings instead of real maps. I used a dash mounted Garmin for last 18 months and then installed the DNX7160 Kenwood. Nav is also by Garmin and works same as my dash mounted Garmin Nuvi. There are only so many GPS navigation manufacturers out there and they supply the OEM and aftermarket both. Not sure about the new Audi OEM nav systems though. I'd call unit manufacturer for help; Audi will be of little assistance I think.

I have a Garmin nuvi 3790 and it does the same thing with street names in Ottawa. It is strange, becuase it only displays them in French if I do a search. If I am driving, and just observe what is being displayed, or if I add the current location as a POI, it displays in English.

Annoying, as I live on a Crescent, and instead when I save my home address, it shows up as "Croissant ..."

I think Garmin also uses Navteq data.

Hi,
Living in Montreal, I have the same problem...I'm English and the wife is French and I do switch the MMI mostly to French...but is there a way for the Nav system to say the street names instead of "turn left now". I am still in the learning stage and find it distracting to look at the nav screen for the name of the street.
