I am aware the Q5 does not have a brake controller. an aftermarket controller has to be added. most cars have a port for it to plug into, otherwise it get hardwired.

Interesting. Let us know what you find out. Legally you should be OK with a surge brake at the Q5's tow rating or do you already have a trailer with electric brakes?
