Exclamation How do I build a 250- 300HP 2001 A4 1.8 t?

Hey,

Totally new to this engine in terms of what to get, what is the most effective,
I am starting a rebirth of my 2001 A4 1.8t, tiptronic,
I have about 2-3 grand to invest in the engine.
I would like to keep the cost to a min but want to buy the right stuff to continue the gain,

The car is a major slug of the line...any ideas of how to get jam down low?

What brand would be the best for...Chip mod? (should I get a self programable)
Cold air intake? Turbo? Inter cooler? Waste gate/ Control?
Blow off Valve? Header? Exhaust? (could I just run a straight pipe?)
Oil type? Fuel pump/ oil pump? larger injectors?
Head stud kit?

How much power can this engine make reliably? Its got 195,000k what should I replace so I dont blow it up? Currently runs really well, has been taken care of, installing a regula tunning body kit, 19'' wheels.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated;

Josh

I am picking up an 00 and my plan is simply chip, cat back exhaust and maybe a k04 and diverter ..would be happy with 200-220 on 93 pump gas..not sure I am a newb too..my car is super low ks and already has the suspension done so time will tell..

Chipping is good and so is all the bolt on stuff for power. However with age of the engine and unknown condition and you wanting to beat on this car on the track ( i assume) some new sleeves and piston rings to tighten everything up for your upgrades. You might find a tuned engine for less than the cost of the shop time if you don't have your own garage.

Not a bad idea i will look into a tuned engine

Get a compression test done. Popular chips for these cars are APR and GIAC. There's also PES and Speedtuning.

Thanks for ecu tunning info, compression is good all around seems like it can take a bit of a beating still

It's a turbo engine, so the maximum power is ultimately going to be limited by your turbo selection. With the correct turbo, you can get 1000HP out of your 1.8T. That said, you will not get to 300bHP on a K04 (not reliably, anyway); you'll need to step up to something along the lines of a GT28RS or larger. That means new manifold, DP, injectors, tuning, fuel pump, and intake and charge-air piping; which, all adds up to much more than $2-3K.

I don't mean any offense here, but it doesn't sound like you know much about tuning cars and are just rattling off a ton of questions. The 1.8T is one of the most tuned engines in history; and, there is a nearly-limitless amount of information out there in that respect. Check out my build thread for a taste of what the 1.8T can do - I can easily walk on most new-model 400-500HP cars. Properly building a reliable vehicle that doubles stock power is going to take a lot more than $2K - you have to worry about everything necessary to handle the power: maintenance, tires, brakes, suspension, etc.

Everything above aside, a chip/injectors/turbo-back really wake the 1.8T up; and, make for a reliable daily driver. For tuning, I'd go Eurodyne or Unitronic; or, APR for something a little more conservative.

Also, the 19" wheels are - depending on weight - going to hurt your power (and steering, handling, and braking) significantly. You could always sell the Regula Tuning kit and the wheels, and put it towards your performance budget. Your call: show or go

Cheeba brings up some very valid points. Most especially on the " waking up" of the 1.8
Do you want flash or dash? Having both is not cheap.
As for wheels. I've been looking at all kinds of selections out there. My stock 17's are not quite enough for the show I want but the 19's are as Cheeba said, going to hurt your ride.
In the end I opted for 18's and suspension from an s-line which brings down the the car just enough to not only look good but perform really well without sacrificing too much ride comfort.

You said the car is a bit of a slug off the line. From all that I have read, this is a plague among tiptronics. Mine is also subject to this issue and the APR chip tune did nothing to help with launching below 3k rpm.
I've heard some say that a once you get to the 300hp range though, your stock torque converter ( clutch for automatics) risks failure if you are launching with any frequency and may need to upgrade to a beefier version. NOT CHEAP .
I've heard also that getting a transmission oil cooler and better tranny oil may help prevent this.

Im building an Eliminator kit as we speak (GT2871RS)

you need :

- Injectors 600cc+
- Good smic or fmic
- Upgraded intake
- 3" Downpipe
- Exhaust line
- DV
- BAT tune (Im going with Unitronic since their head office is 10 minutes from my place)

This is good for 300awhp @ 20psi and more but if you want more you need upgraded rods.

Edit : I missread you Cheeba I thought you were saying you could get 300awhp out of a K04 My bad Also, the Gt2871 bolt on to the stock manifold if you want to go cheap.

At OP : Cheap way to get power from a 1.8T is to go Unitronic Stage 1+, this will give you about 215/245 for 650$ (Flash + R1 DV because cardboard diaphragms suck *****)
