Hey Mike H.,

I am doing the leg-work - seeking help from the Forum is one step in the process. I am surprised that no one in the Audi Forum has written about bringing a new Audi back from the U.S.

When I find a solution, I'll post it.

I found a demonstrator 2010 A6 Avant Prestige at a dealer in Indiana in late December 2010. After a lot of discussion, the dealer explained that Audi USA requires sales by dealers to be to Americans with a valid driver's licence and a social security number.

I was able to get the help of an Uncle who bought the A6 Avant and then sold it to me.

I still think that prohibiting non-U.S. residents from buying a new car is solely to force prospective Canadian buyers to make their purchase in Canada. I saved 25% over the Canadian MSRP by buying in the States.

Don't you have to pay any extra fees or taxes to buy it off your uncke now?

JayK,

I had to register the vehicle in the State where my Uncle lives and had to pay that State's registration tax (about 4%) and I received a 60-day permit. Some States (Pennsylvania for example) do not have a registration tax. Other States require proof of insurance in order to register a vehicle, so you have to do your homework.

The GST (paid at the Canadian border) and PST (paid when I licensed the A6 in Ontario) were based on the re-sale price.

I have a Canadian relative in the US who's been studying there for almost 10 years, I wonder if I could do the same with him?

And how would you determine the "re-sale" price of the new car that your uncle now sells to you?

Can't seem to find New York's car registration tax online so far.

Your Canadian relative would have to have a U.S. social security number and an American driver's licence. The U.S. Dealer requires the driver's licence and the state registration office requires the SSN.

There are blue book values for re-sale vehicles and you can rely on these to determine the appropriate price. A rule-of-thumb is that new vehicles fall by 30% when they are driven off the lot.

Have a look at DMV.com to determine the value of New York State's registration tax.

Good luck.
