audi 90 question re: locking rear diff.
Hi everybody
I have a '94 90. I was hoping to play around with the locking rear diff this winter but when I push the diff button and try to drive after the green light comes on it starts clunking grinding and lurching! Needless to say I stop imediatly and dissengage it! Yikes. What a horrible sound to hear from your car.
Anyhow it has 325,000 km on it and I was wondering what causes this and what I can do to fix it, I do all my own stuff.... exept e-test LOL!

Re: audi 90 question re: locking rear diff.
Locking the diff should only be done in times of low traction. If you lock it on pavement and try to drive around a corner it will behave as you stated as something has to slip. It's basically for getting out of deep snow, mud, etc.

it also shuts off after 20kph or 25? check your manual it should tell you...if your diff doesnt make noise usually i couldnt see it having a problem but hey it might be worth pulling it out or at least check/change the diff oil

If you weren't going around a corner with the diff locked it shouldn't be a problem, in a straight line it's unaffected but in a corner the outer wheel has farther to go but if the diff is locked it cant travel the extra distance without a wheel hopping.
with that many kms I would change the fluid anyway.
