Default 2001 Allroad - child tether anchor location?

I started out asking about the DRL modification to my U.S. 2001 2.7t Allroad, and we started to get off-topic about the child tether anchor business.

With a little googling, I found a few sites that seem to be U.S.-based that say the same thing about Allroad specs for 2001:

"Rear child seat tether anchor preparation"

Does that mean I don't need to do any modification for this to pass the RIV federal inspection that says it's required?

How can I tell for sure that it's already there (or definitely NOT)? And if it's not there, what all is involved with getting it there? Do-it-yourself (for a newbie)? Big job/little job? I have a nearby general auto shop that would give it a try if necessary, but the more info I can give them about how to do it right, the better...

Thanks for any and all suggestions (including some 'freaking obvious' ones - don't be shy)!

The anchors are located on the back side of the rear seats. There are 3 anchors and they are approx. 3" up from the floor of the luggage area.

Not sure about your other questions but they are easy to spot once you know where they are located.Hope this helps!

Great! They're there! Thanks for answering such a simple question - much appreciated.

Now to figure out the daytime running lights 'fuse' trick... while awaiting my registration code from Ross-Tech!

Ha - great. Now my response is a cross post from your earlier message. VAG won't help you with DRL on the Allroad. It has to be hard wired.

Now - back to the Child tether - did you happen to find those loops in the seats too?

Right - I got the bad news early in the other thread...that's why I was looking at the 'fuse' thing instead.

I didn't look on the seats (yet) - kinda figured that having the anchors there on the back of the seats would be all that Canadian Tire would be looking for. Am I wrong?

I'm afraid I can't answer that but if the loops are in the seats too I imagine you're okay!

Bottom line is that when that first inspection happened, all they mentioned was the DRL right? If so, don't worry about the tethers. Just get sign off on the car with what they expect.

The first inspection (from RIV) hasn't happened yet. The Form 1 from RIV mentions a few things like DRLs, child tether anchors, functioning air bags, and I think a French label on the air bag something-or-other, but that last one hasn't been a problem in the past.

So I think I'm good to go once I get the DRL-fuse thing working, plus I have to see why the air bag light is on.

Interestingly enough, pulling the fuse that said it controlled (among other things) the air bag warning light didn't make any difference - the light still came on. Same with the diagnostic computer fuse. Not what I had expected somehow!

And just to be clear, the RIV inspection (at Canadian Tire) is to pass the federal standards and get a stamp on my Form 1 - then I can go to an Alberta registry office and get an Out of Province Inspection form which looks for more safety-related issues, like brakes, brake lines, maybe frame rust, I guess general road-worthiness! That'll be another one to worry about later, though...

AFAIK, the RIV form mentions all these things but the *actual inspection & approval* comes from Canadian Tire and one its me3chanics. That's a whole separate form. You need to go there first with your RIV form and *they* tell you what you need to update, then you make the changes, then they approve it.

You may be wasting lots of energy on these tethers, etc. when it may not actually be an issue. I wouldn't change anything until they tell you what they expect to see updated.

(Since you're 80% there with the DRLs, drop them in (and be sure to mention that the Xenons are not moddable. The Fogs are the only way to go and it's 100% legit.)

Air bags - now that's a whole other topic...

True enough, although the RIV form 1 lists things that they expect to find during the inspection, like DRLs, child tether anchors, and functioning airbags, so I figured I would make sure those were taken care of before bothering with the form.

I'm feeling pretty good about the child tether anchors, but I know that airbag thing has to be fixed to pass, or at least the light can't come on! (why doesn't removing the fuse turn off the airbag warning light?)

I suspect that from past experience they won't really care too much, as long as *some* lights come on when the car's started...but will keep that in mind, thanks!

Yes, I might start one on that!
