New S4 Avant owner

New S4 Avant owner
Just introducing myself like everyone else. Just bought a 2006 S4 Avant 6 speed (Sprint Blue). First V8 I've owned. Sounds great. Hoping to add some mods over time.
The only problem I'm currently having to deal with is with the SD cards. The RNS-E seems to hang loading the mp3 files. I inserted 2 non-SDHC 4GB cards and after an hour, the system was still stuck at "loading".
I read somewhere there may be a limit on number of files but nothing mentioned about it getting stuck reading, just not showing all the files.
Weird...anyway, I doubt people actually read these entries but if someone does and happens to have a suggestion, I'm all ears.
And if you're a new owner like me and you're in this section to add your own intro, welcome to the club

Re: New S4 Avant owner
Hi awd-leo,
Thanks for the response.
So I performed a little more research and here are my findings:
1) The initial 4GB cards I used turned out to be SDHC cards which is why the system couldn't load them. No error message, the system just hung there saying "Loading" forever.
2) Found a 4GB non-SDHC card and it worked well.
3) Both the folder with MP3 files inside as well as no folders worked (i.e. all MP3 files in the root folder).
4) The file limit is at 400 files. I've read that some people said 400 and others said 512. In my case, it's 400 (I had 812 files and only 400 showed up).
5) The mix (random) option works as long as I don't press the "Next" button. If I click on the "Next" button or use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel, the "Mix" option disappears and it simply goes to the next song. I have to repress the "Mix" option to go back to random. This is quite annoying as sometimes, I may not be in the mood to listen to a particular song and simply want to skip to another song while keeping the random option on. Oh well...guess I'll have to live with it.
MY RNS-E version is:
SW: 0040
HW: H70
Not sure if this can be upgraded via a CD, and if it can, whether this will resolve the 400 max mp3 files or the random feature. Will have to research this.
Thanks for the response.

Re: New S4 Avant owner
Ok, after some further reading, it seems the random setting is a bug and is fixed in subsequent versions. The 400 file limit is also fixed in subsequent versions. Unfortunately, my system doesn't seem to want to update. I downloaded and burned a new version (650) to a CD and nothing happens. It just sits there.
Sigh...

Re: New S4 Avant owner
I didn't know that as I did not have that much files on the cards.
Can't check my RNS-E 'till I get home today as I drove different car to work today. Interested to see whether it's the same version as yours. Something tell me it is though...

Re: New S4 Avant owner
Update since then. I couldn't get the 650 update to work because of the CD media. That being said, it's a good thing because the 650 is for Europe. US only goes up to 260. I found an image for the 2009/2010 NA Map DVD which also has the 260 update and burned it onto a Verbatim DVD (seems like only Verbatims work) and the update worked well. I can now confirm the random/mix setting is fixed with the update. However, I haven't had time to check the file limit on the SD cards. Will do so this week hopefully and update the thread.

Re: New S4 Avant owner
Ok, just tested it. Unfortunately, the max songs for sw 260 on my model is still 400 (406 to be exact). And SDHC cards still don't work (expected as no one said they would).
Oh well...
I would have actually preferred if the system combined both cards into one play list rather than increased each card by 100 or so songs but neither occur.

Re: New S4 Avant owner
Hmm, good info. I have been trinking about trying out my SD card slot. I have the original 2009/2010 disk. I wonder if mine was ever updated or if the update always comes with the new version. Now I need to check :P
