Default New guy in Santa Maria, CA

Hi everybody. I've had a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro for almost two years now. I love the car but lately maintenance has been getting out of hand, plus I enjoy working on my own cars. I've recently decided to start doing my own maintenance/ trouble shooting. I was shocked to find out how difficult it is to change an air filter (not done yet). I currently have a problem with the immobilizer, and a couple of other quirks. I'm looking into purchasing a Bentley manual and possibly a Vag-Com or other type of code reader.

My current error codes are:
18062/P1654- Check DTC memory of instrument cluster: No signal/ communication- intermittent
17978/P1570- Engine start blocked by immobilizer, signal implausible- intermittent
18017/P1609- Crash shutdown activated- upper limit exceeded, present
Cluster ECU codes 01039- Coolant Temperature senson (G2) open or short to ground- intermittent
01176- Key signal too low- intermittent, present.
Central electronics ECU code 00474- Control module for immobilizer, no cummunication, present
For diagnostic purposes, codes were cleared, then the various ECU's were rechecked. Code 01176 recurred; code 00474 would not clear and then self-cleared.

Also, once in a while after starting, the emergency flashers will go on and won't turn off until I restart the car. I've tried "cold booting" the car and that seamed to work for about 1/2 a day. I have two keys and both do this. One key won't operate as a remote. I recently put new batteries in both keys, but that didn't solve the problems.

Thanks for any suggestions, and I'm really happy that there's a community of Audi enthusiasts out there to collaborate on these things. For those of you familiar with the open source software community; this feels like open-source car repair to me (which is great).

1move- thanks for your reply. The starting problem was actually happening before I changed the batteries in my keys. All I did to get the keys to work again was use them in the door and ignition once. Now 1 of my keys works as a remote, and 1 doesn't (same as before the battery change); both start the car but often not until the 2nd or 3rd attempt. I'm thinking of getting them reprogrammed at the dealer, but since they start the car (just not always on the first try) I'm thinking that maybe the keys aren't the issue. Someone suggested ordering anew ignition switch from the dealership using my vin. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Thanks again 1move, I'll try that after work on my 1 remote with the remote that doesn't work...I'll probably still need the new ignition switch that has been recommended for my start up issue, but atleast this will get my 2nd remote working.
