Welcome fellow newbie - glad to see that we have a consultant on board (at least one) and an A6 owner. I just bought a '99 Avant and am a little concerned about the reliability of the car. I have had Toyotas and Hondas since 1983 (crappy North American before that but I didn't know better!). I liked the ride and condition of the car and hope all goes well. Looking forward to your assistance, if necessary.
Overview:
The 2.8 Avant is a strong engine, provided, throughout the life of the car, the regularly scheduled maintenance was performed. Based on your knowledge from whoever you bought it from, look out for the normal wear and tear items like brakes, springs and shocks.
Common problems:
The 1998 - 2000 A6's had a front end issue that still haunts owners today, even after a scheuled tie rod recall in, 2001 I believe... If you don't already, you're likely to hear knocking and clunking in your front end eventually.
I recommend oilchanges every 5k to 7k.
Keep in mind:
The car is almost 10 years old, don't expect a cakewalk. Especially in an Avant, depending on what you use it for, rotate your tires on a regular basis, a throttle body/fuel injector cleaning may help with performance, definiely flush out your engine oil if you haven't done so already (you'll be surprised to see what that'll clear out), and most of all, don't cheap out on anything.
But also be smart about it. What are you using the car for? Is it worth it for you to pound this car with repairs? What's the history of the previous owner like? Ask before you act, and line up your ducks before you shoot!
