TT importation _ question re bumpers

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
I imported an '04 TT last week from NY because there's no longer a need to modify the bumper- only needs daytime running lights for Fed inspection. Asked NY Audi dealer to do but apparently '04 TTs are not equipped with the module as is the case with newer models. Instead, had my local mechanic hook up my fog lights. Simple.

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
In short, we don't anymore.
Up until a month or so ago Canada's bumper laws were different than that of the US (and the rest of the world.) In Canada a bumper had to pass an impact at a negligibly higher speed than the US. Therefore certain cars had a different bumper, including the TT. If you wanted to import one of these cars from the US you had to change the bumpers. Canada recently harmonized it's bumper laws so this is no longer a necessary step in importing a vehicle.
Have a search around this forum at couple of "our" TT's (both generations) and see if you can spot the difference.

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
TT passed the daytime light inspection. I thought I was in for trouble as I could see 2 Canadian Tire mechanics looking at my light switches and playing with them. I taped over the daytime running light word above its switch with a very small piece of tape. I had the lights on at the time. I couldn't watch once they started screwing around with the switch, but I suspect they just went through all of the stations and saw there were always light on, so it passed no questions asked.

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
OK so let me get this straight as I'm looking at getting a tt this spring/summer, the bumpers no longer have to be changed to import from the US?? This is great news because that was going to be the deal breaker for me if I couldn't find an economically enough priced car!

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
I have done 2008 bumper in March. 2008 model oly requires front bumper - not rear - go figure. Cost approx $2500 and the parts are minimal and ridiculously expensive, but prior post is correct in that RIV require paper evidence of the parts purchase. It amounts to 2 little plastic 'blobs' on the front bumper which incidentally makes the fitting of 3M plastic stone protection more expensive ( because computer which maps the plastic panels is US based!)
