What kind of tranny? Quattro or FWD? Tiptronic, manual or CVT? I'm not 100% sure on the A4 as most of my experience is with the A6 but there are plenty of things you can take a look at on your own before you decide to take it to a shop.

Our transmissions do not have a fluid dipstick so the only way to check the fluid is on a lift or on very high jackstands. You have to remove the fluid fill plug and use a special tool to check the fluid level. Audi states that these transmissions are filled for life with synthetic fluid, but that is absolute bulls***t. I had my first transmission service at 250,000km and the fluid came out black. ZF transmissions state right off their site that the transmission has to be serviced every 80,000km. Remember, all fluids break down. A service consists of fluid, filter and gasket replacement. You may also need a Vag-Com depending on your model and transmission.

If you do decide to take it to a shop, take it to a transmission specific shop with German experience. A lot of shops specialize only in certain brands, although they say "all makes and models" to bring in more customers. If they're not familiar with ZF transmissions, Tiptronics and such then I'd skip them.

Oh, by the way, how does the car drive? Other than the rattling, does it shift well?

How did you go about checking the fluid level? The transmission has to be hot, which means around 30 minutes of driving time. But then you wouldn't be able to stick your finger in there because you'd burn yourself. There is an "L" shape tool, which looks like a screwdriver that has a 90 degree bend to it. On the end there are markings that tell you the level of fluid in the transmission. If it is below a certain level then it needs to be serviced. Also you can check the condition of the fluid with this tool. If it is black, brown, has bubbles or has excessive shavings then your transmission needs servicing. As far as I know you can not replace all the oil in the transmission without actually removing it from the vehicle. When you do a transmission service you are removing a significant amount of the old fluid and replacing it with fresh new fluid. The key is to have this done regularly to prevent issues. I would check all the fasteners located around the transmission if possible. Check driveline fasteners, exhaust fasteners, etc.
