Default Insurance issues on non-OEM Tires and Wheels

Hi All,

Need some advice. I've put down a deposit on a new set of Avant Garde 22” M310 Matte Black wheels and Yokohama Parada Spec-X 265/35R22 tires for my Q5.

I called up my insurance agency to let them know of the change and they said that because they are non-standard that they wouldn't insurance me. The sizing is +2 and the dimensions are almost the same as the stock 20-inch S-Lines.

They said I had to stick with whatever size was installed at the time of purchase. Which means that I would not be insured either if I decided to go with 18-inch winter tires.

Had anyone else had this problem? Has anyone installed non-OEM and had it okayed by their insurance agency and if so, what agency are you with?

Also, what about Audi Warranty? Would this void the new car warranty?

Thanks!

Thank you for the reminder.

I also uncovered this issue last fall when my wife got a new car. Our insurance company (TD Meloche Monnex) asked if there had been any modifications to the car to increase performance or change appearance. There hadn't been but I did launch into a conversation with the client service rep as far as what sort of things do they and don't they allow. So I've had to formulate an approach to getting mods done.

Thanks to your timely reminder (tonight my stock peelers are being switched to BBS CH ) I called Meloche just now. When they asked what they could do for me I told them tonight I am changing the appearance of my car away from OEM. First she asked what the change was. I said "wheels." First thing she did was give a short canned response that I was going to lose my insurance. THEN however she asked for an explanation as to the nature of and reason for the change. I then explained that I have summer tires and winter tires and I wanted to pay $1000 one time for a set of wheels rather than $400 a year perpetually to swap tires around. She said "ok, that's fine, since that doesn't have anything to do with you seeking a performance gain or altering the look of the car from OEM then we have no problem." And I got her name and a notation on my account that the change was being made. She didn't even inquire as to the size or look or what make of wheel or anything. They coulda been 24" spinners it would seem.

My plan for getting a JHM exhaust onto the car is to blame Canadian winters and shoddy OEM exhaust metal that rusts. eg. "my mechanic told me my exhaust is rusting so I'm replacing it with 304 stainless steel. I'm planning on driving this car a long long time and I do not want the hassle of replacing the shoddy OEM exhaust because I drive the car year round in Canada. This has nothing to do with seeking a performance gain."

They bought it this time.....

That's interesting. I was going to try that also. Glad that it seems to work!
