Default Importing Problems

Over the last few months, I have received a ton of knowledge from this site.

I just picked up my A4 this weekend in Chicago with no problems whatsoever. Everything at the border went very well.

But, now I am home, and I have not received Form 2 yet (understandably), but I can not plate the vehicle until I get a safety, I can't get it safetied until I get the DRL up and running. RIV states 45 days to have the vehicle brought up to Canadian standards, but I can't drive the bloody thing without plates, and can't insure it without an ownership. Has anyone else had these problems? It's nothing insurmountable, but a pain in the butt.

So if anyone is thinking of importing, make sure that as soon as you get to Canada, you get everything taken care of right away.

It just does not make any sense at all. My form 2 is not even here yet, and I risk having my 10 day permit expire. Can't have the vehicle registered until the Form 2 is complete. I was just speaking with my insurance broker, and she can only cover me while the trip permit is on it, after that, no insurance....unless I get the ownership done....AARGH

Figures that Ontario would screw everything up...I guess I should have done my homework, but in all my reading, I have never heard of this problem.

Would still buy in the US for sure, would just make sure that I have all my ducks in a row in Ontario before i bring it over.

if I can remember right your form 2 is the one from the riv? I had it emailed or faxed to me( can't remeber) but its supposed to be faster then mail. if you take your documents into your isnsurance broker they should be able to issue you a one day permit. so when I got my form 2 I went and got a permit drove to audi to get my DRL's activated and then to candadian tire for the inspection and unfortunatley it failed so it took me a nother week and one more permit. just try and be patient as hard as it is haha

It took a while for form 2 to be sent from RIV after border crossing, but you could request that it be sent online. From that date, you have 45 days (with an extension if required). Did you send them payment? If not, they will not issue the form. In the meantime, can you not get a temporary insurance until such time you've completed modifications and inspections? I'm a little confused about the ownership comment, don't you already own the vehicle? In MB, my insurance agent requested title and bill of sale in order to insure (temporary insurance) for however many days I needed (at a daily rate). It may be different in Ontario though. Congrats on your new wheels!!

Well today the dealership in Sudbury engaged the DRLs for $90 which was respectable. I know a lot of guys down south can do it for $50, but I thought $90 at a dealership was not bad. RIV inspection and safety coming soon.

To conclude this thread, the importing was not a problem, just takes some getting used to. Love the car, love the deal, and loved the service I got today at the dealership.

Everything will be done in time before the 10 day permit expires.
