How To Test A Car Battery With A Voltmeter
I used a multimeter to test my car battery's health. After setting the multimeter to DC voltage mode and connecting its probes to the battery terminals, I got a reading of 12.6 volts, indicating a healthy charge. With the engine running, the voltage increased to 14.2 volts, confirming the alternator's proper functioning. These consistent readings reassured me that the car battery was not faulty, and any issues I was experiencing might be related to other components. Set the multimeter to DC voltage mode and choose a range higher than 12 volts. Turn off the car's engine, headlights, and all accessories. Connect the multimeter's red probe to the battery's positive terminal (+) and the black probe to the negative terminal (-). Read the multimeter display – a healthy battery should show around 12.4 to 12.7 volts. Start the engine and observe the voltage – it should increase to around 13.8 to 14.4 volts while running. If voltage readings are significantly lower or higher, it might indicate a battery issue, requiring further inspection or replacement.
