Help from anyone mechanically inclined
So this question is not about an Audi but instead has to do with my gf's 98 Ford Escort (also happens to be my winter vehicle). The issue is that even after driving the 25km to work the temp gauge just barely moves off of the C. I still get fairly hot air coming out of the vents. Also, if I get stuck in traffic the needle starts to move, but never gets to the halfway point between Cold and Hot.
After searching the internet it would seem that the thermostat has failed and gone into safe mode, which apparently means it stays open. Can anyone verify that the symptom I described is a common one with thermostat failure? Anything else that could cause this? maybe a sensor?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide so knowledge or experience.

It certainly sounds like the Thermostat. I've never heard of "safe mode". Often they just break and are stuck open. There is no special mechanism to keep it open..it's just broken. Your engine doesn't like running at below normal temps for long periods, so you do want to fix it.

If doing it yourself, just make note and pay close attention on which direction the Tstat comes out so you put the new one in correctly. Maybe it's just my history with Tstats.
