Re: Gas Issue
When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? When you do start the car is there a whining noise from the rear?
Changing the fuel filter is something you can do yourself. Its located under the passenger side rear door. Make sure you get the right one (3 pipe or 4 pipe) before changing it. If you are hearing a whining noise from the rear it could be your fuel pump.
Fuel filter is not expensive.

Re: Gas Issue
I have the exact issue on my '98 2.8 A4. It is difficult to start or stalls after filling up with gas, posted about it in the B5 section.
Read the following fault codes with VCDS:
17544/P1136/004406 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
Possible Solutions
* *▪ * *Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
* *▪ * *Check Fuel Pressure Regulator
* *▪ * *Check Fuel Pump
* *▪ * *Check Intake/Exhaust System for Leaks
* *▪ * *Check Secondary Air Injection for Leaks
* *▪ * *Check Vacuum Lines for Leaks
Special Notes
* *▪ * *Fuel Trim Info
* *▪ * *When this fault is stored and external vacuum leaks are not found, less obvious problems may be present:
* *▪ * *Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
* *▪ * *Check Brake Booster and Hoses
* *▪ * *Check Electric Vacuum Pump ( If Applicable )
* *▪ * *Check Crankcase Ventilation System for faulty components

Possible Symptoms
* *▪ * *Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
Possible Causes
* *▪ * *Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80) faulty/jammed
* *▪ * *Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115) faulty/jammed
* *▪ * *Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Sealing faulty
* *▪ * *Pipes between Tank Breathing and Throttle Body leaky/blocked
Possible Solutions
